I just bought a treadmill. My only goals are to stave off an untimely death, and maybe play a little harder in the company soccer gmaes.

" Use the damn search function!" joking...
Start off with 30 minutes 3 times a week then increase resistance and time as you feel you can.

Grab some runervals videos from here.

I use hotel treadmills every now and again and prefer to do intervals: 2 minutes at some base speed followed by 1 minute at a greater speed that increases with each interval until you reach your max and then decreases back toward the base.

treadmills i would do a little longer in session than you would a real brisk walk or jog. reason being there is less (but slightly) energy expenditure in doing the exercise on a treadmill. so if you would usually jog or briskly walk around the park for 20 minutes, i would do for 25-30 minutes on treadmill
OR
go for a slightly higher speed than the jog around the park.

for more efficient burning of fat and for the goal of attaining that more vascular lean look overall in the body, i recommend stairmaster.

They're all the same, and it's actually easier to burn calories on a treadmill. Just gradually up the intensity whenever you can.

To (somewhat) simulate the effect of running on hard ground on your knees, try increasing the incline as well.

It's had for me to handle a stairmaster, but it feels more intense than a treadmill. And thank you for your natural cures for yeast infections. I will promptly buy your book.
