New Year's Eve

So I am all squared away for a New Year's Eve party at a local watering hole here in DC. It is going to be jacket and tie required, but I want to liven it up some and not just do the same old thing. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe nice jeans with a bright colored blazer and white shirt/tie? Any suggestions?

white shirt/tie are out unless you are Usher or Lebron James IMO... how about bright contrasting colors like a red blazer with a pink shirt and blue/pink striped tie or something of the sort? May be a bit bold for some people but...

Sounds great to me, I love bold. Where can I get out of the ordinary color blazers? And dont say thrift store.

How about a velvet sportcoat? I think Banana Republic has one right now. May even be red. Of course, you could just wear your best of everything and really make a statement. Dark DB, glaringly white spead collar, french-cuffed shirt, woven tie, highly shined black shoes, pocket square and loaded money clip for that cash bar. You'll stand out from the blazer, untucked shirt & jeans or olive-checked suit crowd.

Go in a well fitting dinner suit, but dress it down with either a black silk shirt (fitted and not high sheen, keep it classy, and not Trump classy) or a straight tie. Agree with ROI (for once.) It is New Year's, after all.

I dunno about the colorful route, really I would suggest dark. At least choose color OR texture, otherwise, you risk looking like this girl. Er, guy. If you're in DC - and I have no idea of your venue - I'd figure a lot of striped shirts, guys trying too hard or not at all, and some well dressed furriners. Go for good fit and dark colors, and dress it up with a few choice accessories. IMHO. FWIW. Etc.

My local Marshall's had velvet blazers in various colors, including a wine color. You can also get brightly colored blazers from French Connection, I have a bright blue and bright white blazers in nylon, which are kinda a neat look. You could always do a wine colored velvet blazer with pink shirt and blue/pink striped tie, somehting like this perhaps? or this: with something like this, perhaps w/o pocket though: and top it off with: or:

Yeah, personally I will probably go with something like black suit, royal blue shirt, silver tie or something of the sort, that's always a fun look, it's fun to pick out colorful outfits that I probably wouldn't wear though

Oh man, are those jackets from Abercrombie? Sigh... I quit.

I like the suggestions of dressed-down black tie and of a velvet blazer.  Combining the two, how about a tuxedo, with the tuxedo jacket replaced by a velvet smoking jacket?  This one is pretty nice if you're a size 40.

Ummm - the smoking jacket kind of reminds me of Raj on the Apprentice? I don't know if that's a good thing? I like the velvet blazer with jeans idea myself - although it was featured on Wayne Brady in the latest issue of Men's Health Best Life, so it's possible that it will be overdone this year. Bradford

ok well I am going to go with the red blazer at least. I found one on JosA Bank. Anyone got a discount code? I put it in another thread, but no hits yet.

Ok, following up. I ended up with a pink sport coat that I found at the josabank outlet. $30 was too good of a deal to pass up. So I have that and my dark Sevens, black belt/shoes. So it's on to the shirt/tie. What colors do you all think? Links or not?
Depends... How pink is the sport coat? What's the texture? What's your hair color/complexion? Though it's boring, you can't go wrong with a white shirt, navy tie, maybe grenadine weave. I'd wear French cuffs, probably, but fc shirt with jeans and loud sportcoat might scream R+B star (though I think that could be alright, it's a party, right?) or Jackassus Americanus. Try laying some combos out with the rest of the stuff. Also, what kind of shoes are you wearing? My holiday party outfit has been similar to some on this thread, and I've gotten a lot of compliments but a little Am. Ja. backlash. I might rethink for xmas/new year's, just to mix it up. Brown velvet blazer, pink and navy fine graduated narrow stripe spread collar fc shirt w/ PS nekkid lady links, brown suede belt w/ Ballantine buckle, sevens or Levis, brown/lime converse shoes. The shoes need to change...
