I don't meant not to knock everyone's love affair with the "Ivy" style, but most of these looks are incredibly lame.

Are you guys responding to the pictures or to the clothes the people are wearing?

If you like the photos for aesthetic reasons, I can understand that. These students wear their preppy clothes with casual ease, so there is some authenticity and nostalgia connected to these photographs in general.

But if you like the ivy style itself, I have to wonder. The huge shoulders, baggy cable-knit sweaters, and preponderance of ugly shoes isn't flattering to anyone. It reminds me of how middle management dresses in suburbia. Besides, this is how everyone dressed back then. In 30 years, someone could take pictures of today's college kids in t-shirts and flip-flops, and people will go "Oooh! Love that classic Americana style!" Please.

that was really the point. a few good ideas to poach

and, it just has a historical interest. this spread clarified for me the difference between ivy and preppy.

Really? Have you taken an undergrad admissions tour at any Ivies lately?

I love Ivy Leaguers and working my arse to be one, but, even now, I don't think I'd consider Columbia and Princeton places to go look for the most materially beautiful people on earth.

I really liked the late 60's photos, particularly the Brooks Brothers store front.

(1) It's a sampling error to say these photos represent the "general public"
(2) You're right about Columbia and Princeton; the hotties are at Brown

I have some awesome pics of uber-trad guys taken on the Ohio State and U-Michigan campuses in the early '60's. I'll have to dig them up.

Goes to show how the clothing that many of us like to wear really hasn't changed much over the years. A little creepy seeing it displayed like that though...

Are there any other threads similar to this one?

Not here I don't think. There is some good stuff to find linked from the FNB Talk Ivy forum, but I'm a bit too tired to go find it all right now.

Well those Brown cheerleaders are seriously the most unappealing cheerleaders I've ever seen.
