Is a generic size bookbag suitable for a carry-on on Delta? I'm flying out Tuesday nighta nd don't really want to do the checked bag thing. Common sense says I should be fine, but I'd be pissed if I thought I was okay and got there and found out I wasn't.

yes. even a duffle bag is carry-on. As long as it fits in the overhead compartment or below the seat in front of you, you can bring it aboard
