Jantzen Update #2343249324 - Page 3

He could be closed now for Chinese New Year. Try giving him a call. He's busy and trying to get through the back order, so if he still has the order, and isn't on his break yet, my guess is you'd get the shirts in the next three weeks.

did he really say he didn't want to raise prices? that's crazy. if you are swamped with orders and others dying to place an order, honestly, how many people would just say "screw it, too expensive" if you went from $40 to $49 or so? $9 per shirt, given the number he must make, would be a huge boost. i wish i had that problem.

I ordered my first shirt in October, first or second week. I hadn't received it as of last week so I emailed Ricky asking him if he could give me an estimate. If it wasn't made could I change a measurement as well. He emailed me back the following day notifying me he didn't have the order. Could I kindly resend the information. I resent the order and measurements on Saturday. When I got into work this morning there were two emails from him. One was for confirmation and the other was to let me know the shirt would go out next week. I'll most likely order more shirts when the fit is precise. If I was paying 250 a shirt I would be worried if he never got my order. Especially if I had to put a deposit down it would make me uneasy. Next time I will email him to confirm each order. I guess that's the best I can do.

Ah yes, and a Jantzen update of my own: I submitted a 5 shirt order in July (this was my 4th JT order). Never heard from Ricky and never got my order. Emails went unanswered. Alas, the perils of email ordering from an overworked Hong Kong tailor. I wasn't upset, and in fact used my savings for other, more fulfilling avenues (Borrelli shirts at discount.). In early December, I submitted another order and was dismayed to see that Ricky had fallen victim to the holiday rush. No worries again. I just didn't know whether my order came before or after Ricky's cease-order order (as it were). And then, AND THEN. as if fallen from the sky, an email from Ricky just this weekend. "Your shirt order from 12/4/2004 was lost, but now it is found. Your shirts will go out next (that would be THIS) week." Hurray. Viva Jantzen. Viva Jantzen. I hppe the rest of the world that caused Ricky's backlog and bottleneck (and every other bad operations word) has been put off by Ricky's quirkiness and the patient ones among us can get back to our regular routine or emailing our orders, getting responses/not getting responses, and receiving our orders a month...or two...or sometimes three months later.

I don't know how you guys put up with this.  I was ready to order but there are simply too many horror stories.  I'd rather pay Chan $110, maybe for a lesser shirt (?), and at least not have to guess whether I'm going to get it.
I agree completely - none of you should use Ricky - He's really not worth the wait and attendent hassle..

Speaking of their prices, don't forget that the HKD seems to be tied to the USD. So, from my perspective the price has gone way down from my first order. This won't help the backlog. B

Excellent point, Panzer. Did I mention that two of my shirts from Jantzen ate all of the food in my refrigerator, drank all of my beer, made crude remarks to my wife, and then stole my laundry money? I wouldn't mess with ordering more shirts, that's for sure...

yes, they also got my cat pregnant. Potent stuff....

Ricky's store is the size of a couple of toilet cubicals. His business is literally overspilling. Shirts waiting to be picked up/delivered are left sitting in the corridor and suits are hung up on the front door to make for room inside the store where more clothes are hung anywhere possible. Inside the store, more shirts in bags ready to go are laid across the floor, leaving hardly no space to walk. Cloth and swatches are piled up high in a disorderly manner. It's like a war zone. Every time I visit him, there's a big line up and you literall cannot get your foot in the door, and lunch times are the worst. The guy sleeps only a few hours a day, works late and has blood-shot eyes. Locally, he already has more orders than he can possibly handle. He has hired an extra helper, but that won't help much. He has a laptop computer burried under a load of stuff on his desk, so the chance of Ricky checking (let alone repying) to your detail/anal emails are slim. This is the reality. So you can keep ordering from him and if you get your order consider it a semi-lottery. This says two things: 1) strong demand for quality products at a fifth of the normal prices; 2) bad management and the unwillingless to expand.

I like the description -- it sounds Dickensian. I also like the fact that orders take so long. That's Dickensian too. Plus it pisses off all the uptights concerned with customer service.

And keeps the orders down.

I wouldn't mind the wait or the quirkiness of the situation. The problem I have comes when I take the time to fill out and send in an order, and it just never arrives. This seems to happen quite a bit.

i smell opportunity for the right person. one of you MBA's should step in, partner up with him, and set up a proper business.
