Any personal rules for dress shoes + jeans?

Okay, so shoes are worth the money and I'm saving up to buy them from plal.com (thanks drizzt for the link). It turns out I can only afford shoes in the US150 range, like Loake (other options appreciated). They're dressy enough, but also usable in more casual outfits, which will be what I'll wear most of the time. It's gonna be my first purchase of such an item, and it's a big one too, so I've been researching like crazy, looking at WAYWT's etc.

Some sites say the first pair you buy should be black as it goes with everything. Some say always match your belt with your shoes, even when dressing down with jeans. Some say polished shoes look crappy with jeans. Some say your first pair has to be boots for their versatility, and some say just go with shoes like a real man.

I don't know why, but I can't seem to appreciate black dress shoes with jeans, unless they're nicely distressed. It's just something about their color combination.

Do you guys adhere to personal rules for dress shoes? Don't wax utility boots? Never wear dress shoes with jeans? Soles must always be hard? I'm curious what affects your buying and dressing up decisions.

I personally like to keep the overall slimness of the denim in line with the shoe. More modern slimmer sillouhettes seems to pair well generally with fitted denim.

But most importantly rules should only be accepted as guidelines. In the end use your own judgement and let that be the final guide.

No single pair of shoes can serve for all purposes. That said, if you're trying to find a pair of shoes that you can wear with a suit and with jeans, you'll find that the most versatile are brown leather, with leather soles, in a slim silhouette, and apron toe or brogue. These are less formal dress shoes and so will look good with jeans. From pediwear.com: 1) This shoe is a more conservative style, but still relatively informal because of the color and the heavy brogueing. http://www.pediwear.co.uk/detail.php?stock_ID=1882

2) This is more fashionable and pretty close to what you want, if it's your size: brown, sleek fit, minimal styling. http://www.pediwear.co.uk/detail.php?stock_ID=2333

3) This shoe is too informal for business, and too fashion forward in general. http://www.pediwear.co.uk/detail.php?stock_ID=2400

Let us know how it works out.

BTW, why not Allen Edmonds? They're right in the 150 USD price range when on sale or eBay if brand new. Pre-owned shoes can be had for significantly less. Lots of styles to choose from.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought he was looking for something a little more casual that could be dressed up.

In that case, regarding *dressy* shoes, I have no suggestions, being as I am not much into *dressy* shoes.

The only jeans in my current rotation are way too slouchy for wear with true dress shoes.

Very generally--and I know I'll get **** for this--but I haven't liked the dress shoes I've seen worn with jeans. There's probably something that works, but I'm guessing it's fairly more than 150 bucks.

gmku- Or quit guessing since you don't know what you're talking about really as you already stated.

Stuart- Ebay is a good spot to look for some stuff. You can find some chelsea boots that can be dressed up and worn with jeans easy. AE shoes can be found used and at decent prices on ebay as well. You can sometimes score some nicer brands for under $150 as well.

I wear dress shoes with jeans plenty. I have 2 pairs of suede dress shoes, one a light grey with a flat wood sole, another a mid/light brown with a leather sole. I have a pair of black dress shoes with a leather sole i wear with jeans too. I don't really have rules for wearing dress shoes as i wear them with tshirts sometimes, but i do like having a visible leather sole (where you can tell from the midsole) sometimes as it tends to give the shoe a bit more casual vibe.

Why would you hate me? I could see dislike. But hate? Well, that's the kind of world we live in, I guess. I can disagree with you and others here, or get along, whatever the case may be. And I can like or dislike you based on that. But I'm never going to hate anyone, especially in an online forum about clothes. Can we agree that we can disagree, and even make mistakes, without hating each other? Can we agree that we won't be that silly?

.

I admitted that. So what. And I said it was a guess. I admitted I don't have the expertise that others have in this area. So what. What's the problem.
