Not sure. Should've mentioned they aren't my boots, just wanted to show the Whites laces. I *think* they are black.

That's the nice thing about these boots, they are very versatile. When I got that spool of leather lace, I went a bit hog-wild with it. I put leather laces in my Alden suede chukkas and Clarks Desert boots. I quickly realized they didn't look right and reinstalled the OEM cotton laces. However, the leather stayed in the workboots, that's one application that I liked.

I really like the look of White's Boots leather laces. They have kind of a two tone thing going for them. They look sharp.

I like the contrast of colors here.

I was planning on selling my red wings , to order them all in a half size smaller. Weird thing is though, today it was a little chilly so I put in semi thin nike insoles and wore thicker socks I picked up at uniqlo the other day, and they fit much better now.. I even returned the black beckmans I bought a week or so ago because I thought they were far too big.. I might go back , bring my insoles and thicker socks and try them on one more time before buying a half size smaller.

The insole might just do the trick.  That said, I wouldn't rely on thick socks, as then you'll have a tougher time wearing them in the summer or warmer parts of spring and fall.  You ought to be able to wear thin or thick socks and have the boot still fit correctly.

RE: Arch support (or lack of arch) and insoles:

The lack of arch support was a bit of an adjustment for me as well. I use green superfeet insoles in other boots and love them. Unfortunately, I found that adding the green superfeet to my RW's changed the size too much for me to wear comfortably. I still wanted to add a bit of arch support, so I found some inexpensive (compared to superfeet) Spenco insoles. They are green and not rigid like superfeet. The model that worked for me was a half insole with a pronounced arch. It provides a bit more arch support without significantly changing the internal volume of the boot.

If I could find one nit to pick about the Beckman, it would be the lack of arch support. With that said, I haven't found the lack of support to hinder comfort even on days with lots of walking. I suppose only time will tell. For now, the Spenco insoles are working well for me.

Lastly, RE: the leather Latigo Lace from Tandy (I promise not to bore you for another second about leather laces...after this post). You can see in the images below how quickly the leather darkens from a light tan to dark brown in very little time. I applied Obenauf once which darkens them a bit right away. However, in a few short weeks they take on a very dark brown.

These were taken just after applying Obenauf but without much wear:

And the following images were taken today, just a few weeks later. Note they've only see a day or two of wear per week so far.

Does anyone here have the Iron Rangers?  I'm thinking about picking those guys up in black, but I'm wondering if the have the same lack of support as the Beckmans.  No worries either way, given I can toss in a footbed (and just not size down at all), but it'd be good to know ahead of time.

Also, Patrick_B, those laces look damn good darkened like that.  I am definitely a fan.

For comparison: I have both the Beckmans and the Iron Rangers in 10. While the Beckmans are a bit loose and wide (with a thin insole it's very comfortable) the Iron Rangers are quite snug. I haven't really broken them in yet as I wore them only a few times (too many boots). But I'm sure once broken in they'll fit very well. What size are you looking for? I might put mine on the market.

Alas, I'd be buying them in a 9.

Do the Iron Rangers have the same insole (or lack thereof) as the Beckman?

Hey Cathpah

Yes - basicly same lack there of. They have a different feel - less loose and a bit more work booty if you will but great nonetheless. The sole is different as I am sure you have noted but the lack of support is the same. I got the broque rangers and like ot wear them as a bit fancier like a wing tip shoe. Hate to generalize but if I was to do over, I would go down a half on the GTs with or with out the insert but stay true on the Iron Rangers. Not sure I have a lot of extra room for a big inser in the IR's. Hope it helps.

Yes, I just checked. They're the same. I think all Red Wings are actually. And basically all my boots are. Didn't you own the Wolverine 1Ks? I think they're the same, too.

I prefer it that way. To me if the insole give a lot of support the muscles in the foot will become weak.

how are the beckman oxfords (9043, 9042) in sizing?

My apologies for the ankle-squish...I tied them extra tight for the break-in period.

those really great, where do you got those laces...?
