Yes, take protein after, it will help prevent muscle wasting.
Before cardio you don't need protein unless it's been awhile since you last meal, but drinking anything with lactose before cardio is ill advised.
Before lifting though, protein will help, as will carbs, but that is only if you're looking to build mass. If your trying to cut, this will be just added calories and can hamper your cutting efforts by using the ingested calories and carbs rather than stored reserves.
After any workout is when protein and carbs are most useful.
Check out ast-ss.com for some great pro/post workout nutritional strategies, just ignore the sale pitches. I used them when I first started working out with great results.
