St. Maarten for a week - Page 2

the restaurant under a tree is called Johnny B's under the Tree.. it's famous, you can't miss it when you're driving around the island.. lobster is expensive, the chicken and ribs there are great and reasonable..

Ile Pinel is a good day trip - short ride on a boat to a smallish island with 2 restaurants where you can hang out..

Beaches on the French side, especially at Orient Bay, are generally much nicer than on the Dutch side.. Food is generally better on the French side as well, but it is more expensive. Handing out near the Marina on the Dutch side can be fun.

You need a car to get around. It's cheap to rent one, don't make a reservation, just rent one when you get there from one of the small independent chains. Get insurance on the car and don't keep anything of value in it when you park at the beach, or anywhere really. I've been a few times, we've always rented a car, there's never been a problem.

The butterfly museum/hatchery is a good thing to do when you're bored of the beach. So are the movies. Otherwise, there's a lot of beach, some mediocre casinos, and not much else. Haven't been to the new casino on the Dutch side, believe it's called the Atlantis.

Basically, it's fine to relax, hang at the beach, and eat well. The night life is decent, there's a big party at Orient Beach on Sunday night that's a lot of fun. Otherwise you have to make your own fun.

yea the casinos are very weird/creepy there. dead during the day and you feel like your in a deserted town or something.

Strip clubs there are even weirder.

Mullet bay is pretty much the only thing I like on the Dutch side. Phillipsburg is terrible. French side with Orient beach and Pinel island is a must.

Have dinner at La Samanna one night. Show up a bit early and have a drink on the terrace and enjoy the view of the bay. Very nice.

If you are going to day trip over to another island, there's more to do/see on St. Bart's than Anguilla - but if you want to just chill on spectacular beaches, go to Anguilla.

Rent a sailboat and get the hell out of there. Go south young man.

You know what though? For $400 flight and free hotel for a week, I'm happy with what I got.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, i'll make note of the places suggested and steer clear of the casinos before 5 pm. Any idea whether there is a local market for sandals and random beach stuff? What are prices like?

Pretty much any "tourist trap" shop in Phillipsburg. There are a lot of them there... Oh.. and on the major items, negotiate, negotiate. They will drop the price.

Just got back from the Island around midnight today and had a blast.

Definately not a ton of nightlife places to go but what was there was very good. Will provide a more detailed run down of the trip in a day or so.

Thanks for the help, guys.

I never got into Marigot, and never shopped in Philipsburg either. However we (my friend and I) had a few drinks at a sleek spot there with some local girls we met

Casinos on the Dutch side and more of a nightlife there.
True. We hit up Casino Royale (great dance show in front every night) and Dolphin Casino. Also hit up Bliss and Bamboo Bernies which are two clubs right near each other. Hit up Mansion right next to Dolphin Casino on our last night - their bottle service is much more expensive than Bamboo Bernies but it seemed classier. We never got the bottles and stayed about 45minutes. Any way for fun, we stayed at the Sonesta Maho for a few nights (our room classily overlooked a sewege plant).

There is an American ex-pat who runs a bar/restaurant at Oyster Pond right on the dock... ok food.. strong drinks.
We stayed our first few nights at the Westin at Dawn Beach (nicest stay, a bit too quiet for us) and ate at a restaurant across the rocks at Oyster Pond. Forget the name, though the bartender was white, sounded American and seemed to run the place)

Naked beach at Club Orient...
Stayed at L'Hoste Hotel located in Club Orient on Orient Beach. Probably the best spot. It was our last few nights, we had a rental, knew our way around and wanted to relax during the daytime and then do whatever at night. Our first night there was some random party around 1-2 in the morning with a lot of young French guys and girls wasted in "beach-themed" costumes. It was fun. Great service too. On our second to last night we went to a place called Boo Boo Jam, eh, it was a lot of middle aged people dancing.

On the Dutch side.. there is a little house/restaurant. It has a huge tree in the front yard.. they grill lobster there! Get some. you won't regret it!
Yeah I heard of this place. I ended up having lobster in Grand Casse and got massive acid reflux. Killed my mood for more. Heard good things though.

A number of good places for snorkeling.. Red Beach, etc.
Did my snorkelling during a day trip to Anguilla. I'm not a great swimmer so it wasn't a lot of fun. But I can say I did it though.

Great trip overall!

Odd thing is how sore I was during the latter part of the trip, basically the day after I snorkeled.

If you are willing to spend a bit more money but slightly secluded (it's still not a bad drive to the nightlife), the Westin is incredible. A couple of views from our double queen bedroom.

Bumping this thread because I'm planning on spending a week in st. Maarten next month. I'm 25 and still like to party, but I'll be going down with my family and won't really have anyone to go out with. This won't be the first time I've travelled without anyone to go out with, but it's obviously easier to have a good time alone in a major international city than a small caribbean island.

Am I going to be bored out of my mind there?

Anyone?

There's a lot to do there during the day time so I don't see why you'd be bored. At night you can check out the bars on your own
