Having actually eaten at neither, I would choose Alinea over Trotter's without a second thought.

I haven't been to Trotter's, but Alinea is a fantastic experience.

Alinea. Admittedly, I've lived in Chicago for almost 10 years and not gone to Trotter's because of a long-standing grudge I have over his book on management. My friends who have been to both preferred Alinea. Grant is a luminary. If you are in town for two nights and feel like being a glutton, get a dessert only reservation at TRU as well...and eat almost nothing for dinner that night.
