If it comes down to tearing off a chunk of wrapper that will affect smoking the cigar, I'll keep the band on until it's warmed up and I can remove it without ruining the smoke.

If that makes me an asshole, that's fine, I have more than enough unbanded pre-2004 stock.

Guy who smokes cigars:

Fucking tool:

Don't ask me what I'm smoking.
Don't keep relighting your cigar. If it isn't burning correctly get a better cigar.
Don't smoke it down to the nub. It's not a joint. Set it free at about the last third or so.
When done let it burn itself out in the ashtray, unless there's an annoying 20-year-old kid asking you what you're smoking in which case grind it out in his ear.
Take the band off. Only assholes leave the bands on. See above pics.
Don't obsess about cigars, smoking, paraphernalia. Just go buy a few decent cigars, a cheap cutter and a disposable lighter.
Smoke alone, preferably inside or protected from the wind. Ask yourself if you're really enjoying it. If not, move on to a new "hobby".

Don't ask me what I'm smoking.

It's not that hard. Use your opposable thumbs.

And what if that next pull is the bad one? Then you're stuck with that taste in your mouth. Do you lick your plate as well? Sometimes it's best to leave a little behind.

Really? That's what you got from cantankerous old guy? Hipster? Too late to ask your school for a refund?

Fellows, smoke 'em if ya got 'em. But like wine, women and whisky your goal is to try to not to be too much of a fucking twit while you do so.

I was talking about you. Trying to be all obscure with this don't ask me what I'm smoking, don't leave the band on, use a bic to light up, etc. BS. That's exactly what hipsters do.

Cigars and socializing go hand in hand for most people so why shouldn't the topic of cigars, or what one is smoking come up? If I'm sitting next to a stranger by the river and we both light up a cigar I would have to issues with them asking me about what I'm burning, or just talking about cigars in general.

Perhaps I'm just reading this wrong and we are on the same page. I certainly find it stupid when I see men moving the bands on their fake ass cohibas all the way to the cap just so that they will be visible in their breast pocket, or people who don't know jack shit about cigars start mouthing off how they smoke the best cuban cohibas with red dot bands, or smelling a cigars and saying how good they smell while they're still wrapped in cello, etc.

Trying to be all obscure? No. I'm more the "fuck off and don't talk to me" guy.

I was trying to give the kid some decent advice. Namely, that he doesn't need expensive paraphernalia to smoke a cigar. If he picked up CA he would go down the wrong road. He needs a grandfather to teach him how to smoke, not a magazine. And why leave a band on? It doesn't help the taste. Most people do it to broadcast what they're smoking.

In general here's how conversations about cigars go:

"Hey, what are you smoking?"

"Bolivar. Belicosos Fino."

"Nice. How is it?"

"Strong."

"Cool."

The whole conversation takes four seconds and is pretty much inane. Surely you have more to talk to someone about than cigars?

Here's the thing. As a man you have a responsibility to not to leave the world dumber that you found it. Using "burning" for "smoking" means you just don't get that.

Here's another tip. If you find yourself sitting next to a stranger alongside a river you're in the wrong part of town. Get your ass out while it's still yours.

I'm on board with lefty except A) I still don't know nothing about cigars 2) I dunno where to find fish so the above isn't applicable and III) I leave my band on because I am that lazy.

Otherwise, yeah, I agree. I usually smoke with my buddy but we don't talk about what sticks we're burning. Just better stuff to talk about.

^ Still no fish? Spring is coming, that'll up your odds.
