Smoked a por larranaga panetela and a 12 d4.

I need to buy some smokes as I don't have much to smoke that isn't aging. Thinking a cab of jl2s and hdm epi 1s.

What say you guys?

Cigar Aficionado is a great magazine and at $20 a year, it's a great deal. Pick up a copy of the magazine to read.

 

Then head over to your local tobacconist and pick up some different smokes. Most newbies tend to like mild smokes, but I'd suggest picking up a couple different flavors and sizes to see what you like the best. There are hundreds of brands of cigars. A virtually unlimited supply of excellent cigars if you're on a budget (like myself). A few of my favorites: La Gloria de Cubana, La Aroma de Cuba, Padron, Nub, Rocky Patel, Oliva, Warlock, etc. Everyone's taste is different.

 

If it's a hobby that you enjoy, pick up a small humidor. You don't need to break the bank - $100 and you can get a small humidor to keep your stock fresh at home. 

 

You'll also need to look into cutters and lighters. I love my Xikar Cutter and my St. Dupont lighter. You don't need to spend that much on them though. 

 

It's a great hobby. Have fun!

Smoking a cigar is not a hobby. If it is your hobby you may need to reexamine your life. And CA is the worst thing to happen to cigar smoking in the last ten years.

Ha, and why isn't it a hobby? Hobby is defined as "An activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure." Sounds like cigar smoking for me.

 

What's wrong with CA? I know not everyone agrees with their ratings, but there is a lot of good info in there.

It used to be that we just smoked quietly and alone. Occasionally you smoked with someone else, but you sure as hell didn't talk about cigars nor much care what the other guy was smoking. The cigar was incidental to whatever you were doing. Then Shanken comes out with that stupid magazine and the next thing I know 20 year old kids were stopping me on the street asking what I was smoking, then walking away saying, "dude, we totally have to get into that."

 

It used to be this: fuck off before I shove this cigar up your ass.

Sorry, but you're on a forum discussing cigars? That seems a tad hypocritical. 

 

For me, it's a hobby not a habit. I've smoked 1-3 cigars/pipes a week on average for the better part of the last decade.

 

When was this time you're discussing? The 1940s? Were you alive then?

 

I wouldn't blame Shanken for making cigar smoking sexy/fun. It always has been. What's wrong with peaking a 20 year olds interest in cigars?

I may be naive, but I don't think the majority of "regular" cigar smokers in their 20s smoke because they think it's sexy or fun. I'm 21 and I smoke because it's relaxing and something to do while I'm studying or lounging or something.

Sexy was the wrong descriptor. Relaxing, is better.

IMO, Shanken isn't solely responsible, but he has made CA an easy target.

Haha wow it looks like I've started quite a conversation. Lefty, I couldn't help but laugh at your post. Those images you posted with your captions are hilarious. I see where you are coming from, but I do think for many people cigar smoking is a hobby. The reason why I asked was because I smoked a cigar with my boss the other week and found that I really enjoyed it. I just wanted to learn more about cigars as I am always curious about new things.

Don't ask me what I'm smoking.

Don't keep relighting your cigar. If it isn't burning correctly get a better cigar.

Don't smoke it down to the nub. It's not a joint. Set it free at about the last third or so.

When done let it burn itself out in the ashtray, unless there's an annoying 20-year-old kid asking you what you're smoking in which case grind it out in his ear. 

Take the band off. Only assholes leave the bands on. See above pics.

Don't obsess about cigars, smoking, paraphernalia. Just go buy a few decent cigars, a cheap cutter and a disposable lighter.

Smoke alone, preferably inside or protected from the wind. Ask yourself if you're really enjoying it. If not, move on to a new "hobby".

Don't ask me what I'm smoking.
