In fairness, this is how the conversation went:

kywilkinson (2:21:45 PM): never had a whiskey sour you fuck
CSNY225 (2:22:31 PM): yeah
kywilkinson (2:22:38 PM): drink it sometime man, with knob creek. It's so sweet that following it up witht he bitterness of a sapphire G&T, it's like the best 2 drink combo ever
CSNY225 (2:22:53 PM): how is Sapphire bitter?
CSNY225 (2:22:56 PM): are you retarded?
kywilkinson (2:23:05 PM): G&t is a bitter drink
kywilkinson (2:23:09 PM): that's not news
CSNY225 (2:23:34 PM): .......
CSNY225 (2:23:35 PM): G&T
CSNY225 (2:23:37 PM): is sweet.

So please tell Conne that the STD he got from the Obese Hispanic Sorority Chick (hereby known as OHSC) is fuckin with his brain.

Thank you for incriminating yourself. Dumbass.

If by "sweet" you mean "pretty fucking good," then yes.

Tonic water has copious amounts of high fructose corn syrup to balance out the quinine, making it taste sweet. If I could find unsweetened tonic water, I'd probably run that over normal stuff. And the tonic in glass bottles > all, basically. Forget the gun.

There was a NYT article about "The perfect tonic" that some guy discovered. I'll try to find it.

Well it's a lot less sweet than a whiskey sour at least.

You know I like you, kwilkinson, but Conne is right. A G&T is a sweet drink, not bitter at all.

Maybe my 10:1 gin to tonic ratio is making mine more bitter than a normal one.

Alright, I concede that I was mistaken. To me, they taste bitter. That's obviously not the norm! Then again, considering I normally have a whiskey sour and then follow it with the G&T, maybe it just tastes bitter comparatively. Who knows.

How embarassing to admit defeat to the Conneman. My life is more pathetic than I thought. I should have known better than to argue with him about alcohol.

You know that line from Princess Bride about never going in against a Sicilian when death is on the line? Never argue alcohol with an Irishman.

Unless I'm missing something, isn't tonic water bitter and sweet? So wouldn't both conne and kwilkinson be correct?

Or is that just madness?

Indeed.

Maybe it's possible that some people do not have the taste buds for bitter. Therefore the drink tastes sweet.

To me, it's both. The slight sweetness from the tonic, and a little bitterness from the dry gin.

Tonic water is sweet? News to me.

When I think of "sweet" drinks... I think of girls ordering stuff who's names would get them slapped by their mothers. Stuff with like... fruit juice in it.

Lemme lay this to rest. Quinine is extraordinarily bitter, hence, to balance it, much sweetener is added, as has been noted. I recall it's on the order of 30g/8oz, which is a little higher than a Coke, IIRC. Regardless, it's in that ballpark. But the operative word is balance. The sugar does not neutralize the bitter, it merely gives your brain another sensation to consider as your tongue isn't merely screaming bitter! bitter! bitter! at it alone. Therefore, both the sweet and the bitter components are there, and though tonic is sweet, it's also quite bitter. How you want to call it depends upon your own physiology and taste. Thus endeth the lesson. ~ Huntsman
