I've never heard that one before. I don't know if it makes sense, and I've never detected a difference in breath odor between patients with PND or w/o. Another mouthwash suggestion: Verdesol. It's urea based and great for healing cold sores.

From a UPI article published today: "Japanese researchers have determined eating sugarless yogurt reduces bacteria that causes bad breath by 80 percent, the BBC reported. The study involving 24 volunteers pitted two active bacteria found naturally in yogurt against a gas produced in the mouth. It was outlined at a meeting of the International Association for Dental Research in San Francisco. Volunteers spent two weeks avoiding yogurt and similar foods like cheese. Researchers then took saliva and tongue coating samples to measure bacteria levels and odor-causing compounds, including hydrogen sulfide. The volunteers then ate 90 grams of yogurt a day for six weeks when samples revealed an 80 percent drop in hydrogen sulfide levels. I certainly endorse flossing. Tartar aside, one occasionally finds some very funky stuff in those nooks and crannies.

I don't know when it happened but at some point I began reacting with extreme repulsion to gum-chewers, especially females. Listerine-type mouthwash can dry out your mouth because of the alcohol. Similarly, alcoholic drinks can do the same, and if the alcohol happens to be from Guinness, then your tongue will become a peat bog for the growth of nasty smelly bacteria. Also, almost all toothpastes include an ingredient called Sodium Lauryl (or Laureth, can't remember) Sulfate (SLS). This is a detergent that is also in your shampoo, and all the good it does is make your toothpaste foamy. However, it also dries out your mouth and may exacerbate mouth irritations. There is a toothpaste and mouthwash called Biotene. A little more expensive but it is one of the only ones that doesn't have SLS, and the mouthwash is very pleasant and doesn't burn your mouth. It promotes healthy bacteria, the kind your mouth is supposed to have. Even knowing this, I am addicted to Listerine. I brush my teeth and tongue, use Listerine, then use the Biotene mouthwash if my mouth feels dry. Usually I skip the Biotene mouthwash, though. Remember to keep well hydrated.
J/A/S/O/N makes toothpaste without SLS. SLS exacerbates canker sores, by the way.

I'd buy a cheap, plastic tongue scraper. Also, Tom's of Maine produces an alcohol-free mouthwash, which won't dry out your mouth. You should also minimize your coffee intake.
