You know, I was thinking about this yesterday. In past month, I've bought, I believe, four pairs of shoes--three of them C&J for Polo. Total cost: $1,300, give or take. That's basically a pair of Scaforas. So, am I better off with those four pairs than one pair of bespoke? I really don't know. It's a question that's been weighing on my mind a lot. But part of the point is, these impulse, feeding-frenzy buys do add up.
Secondarily, and I try to explain this to my wife (and to Congress) all the time. It does not follow that because you "afforded" one thing--a pair of bespoke shoes, say--that therefore you can now "afford" some other expensive thing. Unless your funds are practically unlimited, it's far more likely that the reverse is true--I can't afford this pair of shoes now because I "afforded" that last pair. Or those three others since the beginning of April. Or whatever. Anyway.
