TV Remote

Hopefully someone with some tech knowledge can assist me with this one. I recently bought some new gear for my place. I new Samsung 46 in LCD, blu ray player and had Verizon install FIOS. Here is my problem. I bought a media center from crate and barrel http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=994&f=14824 which has some solid wood doors. I have the Verizon FIOS DVR installed behind the door but unfortunately the Verizon remote will not work with the door closed. Does anyone know of any devices or remotes that will work through the closed doors of the media center?

more than likely your remotes are infrared. you will need one that has RF (radio frequency) capability.

logitech 890 is a decent one. they can be had for cheaper than retail if you search around. i have the logitech 880 which is identical but infrared. its nice, but there are some nuisances that come with it. i did buy one of the original 880 models and i have read that the firmware on the 880 and 890 have been greatly improved.

Great, thanks for the response. I will take a look at the Logitechs.

Thanks, I also got the new Samsung LN46A650 for it. I must have spent a year researching TV's when these recently came out. I cannot believe the picture quality on this. The entertainment center is great, expensive yes but the quality on this makes the price worth it. Of course now I have to buy a new remote.

i hear ya. i always get this urge to research tvs every couple months and never settle on one. then i get distracted with other crap and forget about buying one and once i start researching them again, everything is different. what was good 3 months ago is ancient now.

whenever i do pull the trigger, i am just going to buy the damn thing and never look back.

samsungs are great TVs. i think i will opt for a samsung dlp, but undecided really.

if you are looking to upgrade other components in your home theater go here

Thanks again, I appreciate the info. I agree, with TV's, you never know what the new technology will be. I have no regrets with the Samsung. I originally bought the 40 inch and took it back three days later and exchanged it for the 46. Other than that, the picture is amazing.

Alternatively, you could buy an IR repeater.

Agreed. Much more powerful than any of the Logitechs, but you make a major sacrifice in usability. Plus its pretty expensive.

What can that thing do that a Harmony One can't? With less than 10min of work, I easily programmed my Harmony One to control my fairly esoteric audio system, including a Velodyne SMS-1 subwoofer processor. (Actually less than 2 minutes of work, because I just imported the settings from my old Harmony 676 and assigned some things to touch-screen buttons that it didn't automatically do.) And isn't usability the whole point of a universal remote, anyway? I get the feeling that Harmonies are the remote world equivalent of Macs, and the "more powerful" ones are like PCs.
