Well, I can't speak to any of that, but the steak is bad (well, bad, cosidering what else is out there for the same price). For what it's worth, I think the other big national chains (Ruth's Chris ad Capital Grille) are much, much better.

I very much disagree with you guys. My knock on Morton's is that they are inconsistent, but the one in the Gold Coast in Chicago is very very good. Ruth's is always the same, but lack-luster in my opinion. They cover the beef with a ton of butter and stuff. CG is good, but serves Choice beef for Prime prices. There's a steakhouse thread in here somewhere... I won't rehash everything.

I have to agree. Morton's is awful, and that ******* little song and dance they do with the steaks and vegetables when raw is embarrassing. Even though I tell them to leave me alone with that **** if I am ever forced to go, I have to see it happening at all of the other tables. Like Sfield says, it is like watching disneyland for middle management and transplanted LI douches, and for me, that is a very uncomfortable scene.

Ruth's Chris can be OK depending on the location. I go to the one in Palm Springs a bit, and it is good, and there really isn't much to eat down there. The one in San Francisco is mediocre, but still better than Morton's, but I get the feeling that the people eating near be live on the other side of one of the bridges.

Grand Union in Camden does a pretty decent bacon cheeseburger. Fries are excellent also.

Really good burgers arent easy to come by in London, but these guys hit the spot.

Chain steakhouses are the ******* McDonalds of high end restaurant food.

Vanity, if you seriously like Mortons and you live in Chicago, you should rub some coke in your urethra as punishment. The **** is the matter with you? You have an incredible city for food and you're chilling at Mortons?

Chicago has some great restaurants, but it's not as good for steak as you might imagine.

Not sure where Vanity came from.. I assume you're talking about me. I live in Chicago, and eat very well. I do not spend very much of my time in chains, but I have been to a good number of steakhouses in town and the only one I consistently enjoy more than Morton's is David Burke's Primehouse. Gene & Georgetti, Gibson's, and (spitting on the ground) Chicago Chop House are nothing special. Where else are you thinking for a pure steakhouse? There's Rosebud, Ditka's, N9ne, Sullivan's, Keefer's, Palm, CG, S&W, but most of those are chains too. I'd like to try Tramonto's, but I"m never in the burbs. I really just don't understand the source of all the vitriol. I'm single, so never paying for more than 2. Even if the upscale steak chains are overpriced, I'm still getting better value than I would at an Outback or a Jay Alexander's. I always enjoy the food and sometimes I just want a big piece of steak without any frills. Morton's also gets points for always keeping tables for walk-ins. Charley's and Bern's are my favorite steakhouses altogether, but I'm not in Tampa very often anymore

Biggest steak disappointment of my life was Craftsteak in vegas. Just didn't do it for me.

^^^ Keefer's was pretty good. What cut do you get at Morton's? Am I wrong, or do they just not have dry-aged meat on their menu? Every time I've been there, the steaks have come out too thick, too lean, too bland, and too chewy. I almost always have the rib-eye; the one time I had the filet, it was a chore to eat.

Primeburger is OK, not great IMO. I am not a fan of places that precook the patty and then just finish it off an hour later when someone orders it. It is good as is the bacon (a weak spot for most burger joints) but nothing to go out of your way for. The onion rings are a greasy, delectable mess

There used to be a place in west 4th called shakespeare, it was an NYU hangout. I thought the burgers there were awesome, they were connected to a Haagan Dazs and that was where you ordered your desserts from

I had a Whopper Jr. with cheese for lunch this morning. Not great, but does the job.

I believe you are correct... Morton's uses wet aging. I have never found my meat bland at Morton's, but I will agree there is a bigger risk of chewey-ness when not dry-aging. If you are a stickler for dry aging, Morton's is not for you. I like it both ways... but it seems that when meat is not dry-aged, you usually have to go up a notch on done-ness to get the right tenderness (e.g. I'll get Rare in dry-aged, but medium-rare in wet-aged beef). Definitely go to David Burke's next time you're in town. I generally get a bone-in steak. I prefer KC Strip when they have it, but will get a Cowboy or Chicago cut rib-eye if not. Sadly, one of my all-time favorites is no longer on the Morton's menu. They used to make a fantastic Sicilian Veal Chop. I make it at home every now and then, but it was a real treat at the restaurant and not too much more expensive given the prices at my butcher or whole foods for Veal loin chops.
