There are two schools of thought on this;

Either you believe that you cannot see the cheese, therefore it doesn't exist and the burger is less than everything it could be.

OR

You can have faith that the cheese is there, perhaps lurking impudently under the egg, waiting to catch you off guard. The burger is the unexceeded realization of the burger as a whole. It is the Ragnarok of meat sandwiches. This is the last burger you will ever eat, because it will kill you, and you will die happy.

The decision is yours.

I think this burger cannot possibly be cheeseless. Such a gross oversight would be inexcusable - therefore the cheese must be there. Thats just the way I see it.

I think they left the cheese off as a social commentary. It is the burger equivalent of ordering the diet soda with the super-sized meal. It is highly ironical and done with a sneer.

Just wanted to say thanks for the several recommendations for Five Guys - tried them this week.

I know it's just a chain, and may not be the finest burger anywhere in town (Manhattan) when all restaurants and bars are included, but it's several orders of magnitude better than the typical diner fare.

I am sure these have been mentioned a few times ( i dont feel like reading this entire thread)... Bistro Burger at Corner Bistro is good. Shake Shack is good... but more so for the scenery. I am going to Island Burger tommorow. All my friends say wonderful things about that place. When out west... In n Out burger rules. Of course, i am sure these have been mentioned in this thread. Wanted to contribute my .02

Last night I had the Murray's cheeseburger at RARE on 6th Ave. near W 4th St. Basically it is an all organic burger with a cheese selected by the Murray's Cheese Shop cheese monger each week. This week it was a sharp white cheddar along with applewood smoked bacon, a chipotle ketchup an topped with an onion ring and served with a micro green salad + they had Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale on tap! Unbelievable! Definitely not cheap, $18 for the burger, $6 for the beer, but damn was it good. A once every few months type of treat.

I ate one of these a few days ago, and I feel compelled to resurrect this thread to testify just how good it was. This was by far the best burger I've ever had in my life.

There's nothing different about it really (I had the standard with edam cheese); it's just a beef patty on a bun with some lettuce and the usual. But man, is it incredibly tasty. The bun is a little crispy, the lettuce is bracingly fresh, and the sweetish kiwi tomato sauce just ties it all together. Simply amazing.

I'm no burger afficionado, but the best I've had in recent memory was at Primeburger in midtown Manhattan. I had the bacon cheeseburger. Perfectly done medium-rare patty, chunky but not too chunky. Sublime bacon; crispy at the edges but meaty and ***** in the center. Cheap and delicious.

I just had my first Five Guys burger last night and it was pretty damn good. Would I say it's the best burger in the world? No. But, it's a damn good burger. Still not better than the Hamburgao burger that I started this thread with.

Five Guys is indeed delicious. Did you have the fries?

Yeah. I've actually had the fries before (during my fasting when I wasn't eating meat). The fries are definitely the most delicious I've had in a while. Must be the peanut oil.
