My last job before I quit the marketing game and headed off to law school was as marketing director of Ancestry Publishing. This was about 15 years ago. The company has grown substantially since then. They do a good job of collecting records and making them available.

The lds.org website also has lots of good (and free) data available.

Any suggestions other than what's been mentioned? What about Ancestry.com or Recordsbase.com?

Do these sites help with the records or are they just a way to record what one finds?

Familysearch.org which is affiliated with the LDS (Mormon) church. In fact, you can probably get an LDS member to assist you in the process if you go to a Family History Center at an LDS church (usually a "stake center," a "stake" being the Catholic equivalent of a "diocese").

Many local libraries have genealogy rooms that have a reference librarian on staff. They won't do the work for you but they can sometimes point you in the right direction when you hit a dead end.
