I have read elsewhere that it's reputation might have began after some people got messed up by some dangerous "bathtub brews" after it was banned in France.

I have always wanted to try some but never have. I found a bar in Canada that served several different kinds, but have never had it. I thought I heard it was legal in the US now.

Yep, as of August 2007 a certain variety similar to the current French form, but closer to the original recipe, I do believe.

If I had more time (and energy) I would look into this a bit more. I have been drinking French absinthe for several years. What I really would want to know is if thujone is like a volatile oil, such as THC in pot, that degrades over time. If that is the case, analyzing the 100 year old bottles would be meaningless. Of course, you would think the "scientists" would have already determined that, so maybe I am off base.

There is a bar here in Osaka that carries nearly all brands of absinthe currently being produced. A few years ago I tried three in one evening. I have only a hazy memory of what transpired for the following 12 hours.

Lucid. It's alright. Kubler is another, though I have not tried it.

Have you ever tried absinthe?
For some reason, you always struck me as the kind of guy who didn't go for the mind-altering stuff. Well, other than regular alcohol, I mean.

I've only heard rumors about absinthe. I assume it must be pretty vicious b/c everytime I bring it up with my father I get the "I'll tell you all about it when you're 30" thing.

No -- and you're right, I don't go in for mind-alteration, as I barely make it by on the mind I've got! I don't even get drunk. As far as absinthe goes, I've been in the camp that the 'evils' of the stuff are overrated, and that it likely isn't a hallucinogen, toxic, whatever, and that people just got stinking drunk on it. So yes, I'd like to have a bottle in the bar as a matter of course, and since I enjoy Pernod, it all fits together nicely. As I'd likely only have a shot or two at a time, like everything else, it's not going to cause me grief -- if that little really was a problem, we'd all know about it for sure rather than it being the stuff of legend and myth. The only reason I don't have it yet is beacuse I really need to read up on it to find the one I should best get, perhaps it's Jade? I don't know. Will get around to it sometime, certainly. When you're 30? WTF? Sorry, no offense to your father but that sounds a little lame.... ~ Huntsman

There's no tripping with absinthe. You just get buzzed, then drunk.

It is quite lame, in fact. But he's got quite a colored past when it comes to mind-altering substances, of that much I'm sure. I could understand him not wanting to give that information to me freely, as if it would justify my doing it. Of course, I'd never get into anything like that and have no want or need to, but I can at least understand why he wouldn't want to talk about it; "it" being a time in his life he isn't too proud of.

I wouldn't mind going on a week-long absinthe binge after I'm done with finals.

That was my experience, too. It wasn't so different from slamming back a lot of tequila shooters. But it tasted like anise.

That, at least, puts things in perspective; a much more sensible position.

If you can justify the price, I'd highly recommend Century Absinthe. Its pricey... but is among the nicest absinthes I've ever had to drink (especially in the high Thujone category). It takes ice cold water to louche properly, but I've never really been overly concerned with that. I got one when they were $68 a bottle, plus shipping... Currently, like $150 altogether... blech! I just can't spend that much money right now, as much as I'd love another bottle of it.
