New Laptop

I am looking to buy a laptop for my mother for her birthday and mothersday (they're a day apart) and would like suggestions in terms of which manufacturers are best (customer service, build quality) and which to stay away from.

I'm aiming for a pretty basic laptop with as much memory and as little weight for about $700. She'll travel with it ocassionaly hence the weight issue in which case she will watch a few movies, but for the most part it will be used for light multimedia chores (viewing photos, listening to music and watchig some movies) and mostly internet browsing and word processing.

Also, what do any of you know about the Best Buy Outlet Center? They offer much cheaper products and say none have been opened or returned.

You can get a basic brand new Dell laptop for $499. Hewlett Packard, which has vastly improved its quality, also has some good choices from $499-$799. http://www.dell.com/content/products...=19&l=en&s=dhs http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...psg/notebooks/

I think I'm going to stay away from dell. I've never heard anything good about their customer service.

I used to have a Dell, and it gave me the blues. They are extra heavy, their batteries don't breath well and their support sucks. IMHO, a laptop isn't something to go cheap on because when you do it becomes obsolete in a few months. I'm a mac user and I have mostly nothing but good things to say about the macbook. You could get a used one for about $800.

I'd recommend Lenovo as well. For around $700 you can get an entry level T series or a fairly well-configured R series. The only difference between the two series is that the T series is slightly thinner and made of a more durable material. They also regularly have 10%-30% sales on their website.

Another vote for Lenovo, although I am typing this from an Asus.

Damn, I forgot about Lenovo. However, I went ahead an ordered a Toshiba. Final cost was just under $800 including 2 yr entended warranty from Best Buy. Thanks for the feedback guys.

If you still can cancel, do it. There's a pretty good deal on slickdeals on Lenovo Thinkpads, including the R-series and the workhorse T-series. I'm really tempted to replace my aging T42 with a T61, or one of those new ultrathin X series with a 8-10 hour battery life.

You know, I may just do that! But it's already shipped so I may have to wait until it gets in then return it at a store.

Lenovo.

I have a Dell at work and it is a disaster. It's on its third motherboard and only boots 1 in 3 tries but they are upgrading me tomorrow.
