What's the best and worst time to go to Chelsea Barbers?
Stick to weekdays from 10 to about 3, or Saturday mornings shortly after opening. Weekdays from 5 to 7 are the worst times to go.

I just recently shelled out the $720 for the membership at John Allans. With as frequently as I go (plus the manicures, shoe shine, beer, etc.), I found the membership to be cheap. FYI, the Minardi Salon was voted cheapest haircut for under $25.00.

Does "full service" include a rub and tug?  Or is that extra?

I bet every patron wishes it does. I have yet to see an unattractive woman work there, I don't know where they find them, looks like it is a pre-requisite to working there... kinda like an upscale hooters without the big headlights

There have got to be some NYC members with some decent recommendations. I have two general criteria for a good hairstylist: - his/her cut has to grow out well such that it doesn't look awful 10 days afterwards. - he/she has to be able to suggest cuts that work with the shape of my head and face and are conservative enough for work. I used to pay $50 for a haircut in Austin, TX with a stylist that met those criteria. This being NYC, I can understand that I might need to pay more than that, but I would think I could find something that fit the bill for $75 or less. That said, I've tried a couple of the mid-priced chains such as Jeffrey Stein and found them lacking. Mike C, I'd appreciate any recommendations you might have. dan
BTW, without hijacking the thread - can you recommend a good haircut in Austin, TX? Thanks

Sorry, didn't see your post until now.  I got mine cut at the Aveda salon in the Arboretum a door or two down from Saks.  That was about 2.5 years ago, though, and the woman who cut my hair no longer works in Austin. dan

Ancient thread. . . Joey at Supercuts on Sixth Ave at 8th Street. I haven't been there in a few years, so he may be gone--call ahead. One of the best I've ever had, $18. I spend $45 now with an awesome hairdresser and I and barely get as good of a cut.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Astor Place near 8th and Broadway. I used to go there all the time. They have a ton of stylists, though, I don't remember the name of the guy I used, other than he's Russian. Don't let pictures in front scare you into thinking they're going to shave a Yankees logo into the back of your head (or I guess it should be Mets logo now). I mean, they will do that if you ask, but the people I've seen are quite capable of "professional" hair cuts as well. I remember a Russian lady named Clarissa as often recommended. If you're older, however, you'll probably feel out of place.

Unfortunately, as I have less hair to cut these days, the barber shop at Port Authority now suits my needs.

Neighborhood Barbers in the East Village. E 9th just west of Avenue A.

Tiny place, 5 chairs, no waiting. You will see everyone there from a 50-year-old villager getting as full-on mohawk to John Varvatos. Last time I was there, Robert Crumb was in the chair next to me.

Hot lather/straight razor neck and sideburn shave.

$14.00.

The problem with Astor Place is that they have so many barbers that you don't know which one to choose. I got my haircut from them twice. Didn't like the way it turned out. But two of my friends like "Dr. Mike".

Expert Barber Shop: 88th and 3rd Ave.

$11 for a cut + tip. Old fashion place, 4 old guys cutting your hair. They don't wash your hair, they don't try to sell you hair or other products you really don't need. They just cut your hair.
