i usually wear plain solid color tees but i was thinking about getting some simple horizontal striped ones. they seem like they were trendy a little while ago. is it too late to get in on the action or are striped tees a classic that never goes out of style?

btw, please don't relocate this thread to the ask a question get an answer thread. i want to generate a little discussion.

horizontal stripes emphasize people's width, if you're not thin don' t do it.

Horizontal stripes are fine, just stay away from the American Apparel versions.

i think it depends largely on the person. some people just dont look good in horizontal stripes, while others can look great in the exact same shirt

Horizontal stripes are great for men. Marine inspired designs (white and navy) are classic

I love horizontal striped shirts...for me they have an old school punk rock look, but obviously depending on where you're coming from they bring a different look to different people. ie: For a while a lot of lindyhoppers/jitterbuggers were wearing stripey Ts, along with stripey socks.

But I think they look best with skinny stripes rather than wide ones

If you're tall and/or thin, go for it, but if you have a big waist/hips compared to your shoulders it really emphasises this.

I think it would look great if you go for some interesting colour combinations, like grey-blue and flax or something like that. Some people look great in very thin black and (off)white stripes, if that fits your style. Of course, it could look terrible too. It depends on you.

Also, I agree that thinner stripes tend to look better.

out of curiosity...

what about vertical stripes? though i don't recall seeing a plain tee that has vertical stripes...

Vertical just looks weird--save that for a dress shirt As for horizontal, I'm a big fan of moderately thin stripes, especially in a deep navy or faded out red color

dude i kinda like the look of some of the shirts but i was kinda feeling the horizontal striped might be played out(gap, j crew, aa, etc all seem to have released stripey crewneck tees in the past year or so and especially this spring. if you went to those places a couple years ago there would be a noticeable absence of stripey tees choices. this leads me to believe there is a trend of increasing stripiness and i usually try to avoid trends that are already popping up in the mall.

Stripes are a simple, logoless, textless thing. Just simple colors. It can never be "played out"..
