midtown Manhattan gym recs

Looking for a new gym in midtown. NYSC is a little too grimy, although the most convenient. What do people recommend? how is NY HRC these days? Gravity at the Parker Meridien?

Anyone have experience at Definitions, which is a personal training only gym on East 58th?

Thanks.

There are two equinoxes at 63rd and Lex and 57th (ish) and 1st. Those are nice gyms or there are a bunch of college clubs around with gyms in that area.

Where in Midtown?

You also have Equinox in Columbus Circle and 50th/Bway.

+ another Equinox at Grand Central

I've been a member of NYSC, HRC and Equinox in the last 7 years. HRC is okay, Equinox is head & shoulders above the other two (but also much more expensive). I don't understand how people can deal with NYSC... it's a freakin zoo

Nothing beats the Sports Club/LA at 61/1 (except the Reebok club). There is also a midtown Sports Club at Rock Center.

There is also a nice Equinox at 33/Park at 1 Park Avenue.

There are couple Bally Total Fitness location in the city. There is at least one Bally Sports location. Just checked with their website and there are 5 Ballys in the city and 2 of them are Sports. I go to a Ballys in Brooklyn and my usual gym is pretty dirty. I been in other ones and they seem to be much better. The membership is around $58.00/month with 3-year contract. 2 years ago I found a cool eBay auction for a Bally's membership. I paid once around $1,100 and never paid ever again for any monthly fees, dues or any charges.

I use the NYHRC on 56th Street (across from Parker Meridien). It's convienent for me as it's close to home, but if you can't justify paying the $120+ per month to use Equinox, I believe it's among the best values in the city. Membership gives you access to all of the NYHRC's in the city, and so you can also use the facilities on 23rd & 6th, Astor Place, 45th and Lex which are equally as good.

Used to go to Mid City Gym (the one on 49th Street) back in the day. No frills.

The owner's cool, too, I remember. Low key, but super friendly. Strangely enough, I saw him again when he went and bought the gym in Bayonne and turned it into another Mid City Gym.

I go to Gravity at LPM. Pros: Very rarely a wait for anything Clean lockerroom, decent showers The Burger Joint on the first floor of the hotel (for your bulking phases) Hammer Strength plate-loaded everything (in case you're badass enough to have obsoleted most cable-style pull machines) Cons: A bit pricey Some of the regulars are smelly and creepy (presumably they inherited neighborhood apartments) No eye candy The Burger Joint on the first floor of the hotel (for your cutting phases) No camber bar, no trap bar, no low row machine Dumbbells stop at 100 Locker room is 5-10 degrees too hot in summer.
