Where is the best place to eat dinner at in Roanoke?
Are you going voluntarily? I don't think I've ever heard of a good fine dining place to eat there.

I'm going for work and I asked for the best place to eat, not the finest.

Why are you going to Roanoke? I was there a couple of weeks ago; however, I didn't stay in Roanoke and thus didn't dine there. It's dreadful (well, maybe not that bad). I highly recommend staying at the Hotel Roanoke.

There are some decent restaurants right down town next to the market area. I can't recall the name of the streets. It's been quite a while since I've spent a lot of time in Roanoke. Once upon a time I was there quite a bit.

Thanks for the clarification. There are a few options:

- the Library
- Zorba's, if you are interested in standard Greek stuff
- Alexander's, for something a bit higher end
- hotel Roanoke

It's been a while since I've been through town, but these were the places recommended to me. Unfortunately, I don't think I ended up eating at any of them. There's got to be some smaller southern cooking places that are good.

You might also try Christiansburg/Blacksburg, where Virginia Tech is. With the students, you might have a better chance of finding something interesting.

It's all about the Waffle House in Troutsville. No shit. Awesome place.

Yes I am staying at Hotel Roanoke.

I doubt my boss wants to drive down to eat around the VA Tech kids.

I figured that went without saying!

SoCal, as you know, there is no where to shop in Roanoke. Davidson's used to be good for trad goods but I doubt that's your interest.

Cracker Barrel !

Upscale dining in Roanoke doesn't go very far up. Nawab has decent Indian, and I liked my meal at Carlos Brazilian International Cuisine. (For the latter, make sure it's not prom night. Last time I was there, the place was packed with pink and lavender taffeta.) On the other end of the spectrum, there's always Texas Tavern, a burger joint/greasy spoon that can hit the spot at 3 a.m. But if you go to Texas Tavern, probably best not to sport the Thom Browne.

There's a place downtown with a funny sign on the door that menacingly reminds patrons that some meals will take longer to prepare than others. Especially the potato cakes!

Texas Tavern is a place I'll never forget. I remember all too well going there in the wee hours of the morning ordering "two hots with...". It's a greasy spoon for sure, but at 3 in the morning the food tastes awfully good there.

Doc thanks for helping me resurrect memories of that place.

Well, there's now a place on the market called "310 Rosemont" that offers decent menswear... And both "Trio" and "Metro!" are extremely good restaurants by Roanoke standards. But "Texas Tavern" is a must for you, SoCal...women haven't been allowed to work there for more than 70 years!

I was thinking some good fatty Paula Deen style food.

But, yes, I've heard stories about this Cracker Barrel place and it's gift shops.
