Let's talk about "punk rock"....bands, shows, experiences....whatever. I'm sure the eventual discussion of "oh that's not punk" will occur but so be it

for me, punkrock was about 2 words....MINOR THREAT

I'll bite. My introduction to punk/hardcore was a cassette from a friend with Minor Threat on one side a 7Seconds on the flip. From that point on it was Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Misfits, Ill Repute, Dr. Know, RKL, anything that could be had in the mid 80s. Lots of local and lesser known bands as well. This was the era of hair metal and rap, and I really liked the uncompromising, DIY rawness of punk bands. They were just dirty smelly normal people who didn't make much money playing their music, but had a crazy energy which I latched onto as a kid. I never imagined I'd see the day when bands would be making millions of dollars recycling the music that barely anyone listened to 25 years ago when it was fresh.

old boston hardcore was my cup of tea. very political and socialist.

also i'm sure DDML and shoreman and I somehow crossed paths at Hoagie City on 38th and Lancaster back in the mid/late 90's.

they sure as hell don't make em like they used to.

I grew up in and around D.C., so it was all Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Fugazi, Rites of Spring (anything on Dischord Records). I also loved (love) Black Flag.

right on, I started with DC Hardcore (Minor Threat, Faith, Teen Idles, GI, Iron Cross etc) and got into Boston Hardcore soon after (SSDecontrol, DYS, Jerry's Kids etc)...obviously heavy doses of SoCal punk was mandatory (TSOL, Adolescents, Social Distortion, DI, Germs blah blah)

There's a cool anecdote of how the Boston SExHC crews would go to shows in NYC and instead of X'ing up their hands, doods like Dave Smalley would 'X' up his forehead and when some NY guy gave him a funny look in the pit he'd punch him in the face

I was a half generation too young to see bands like Minor Threat since most of the good bands all broke up by 83 (or went completely disastrous metal like SSD and DYS)

by the time I was really into the scene, we had bands like Slapshot, No For An Answer, Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Agnostic Front, Sick of It All...great times and too many good shows

It's funny how bastardized the term "emo" has become, since I first heard that word when used to describe Rites of Spring, Embrace, Kingface, Soulside, and tons of other DC area post-hardcore bands

I've mentioned it elsewhere before, but my all-time favorite punk band is probably the Subhumans (UK). Something about their music really struck a note with me, but I did discover them around the time I was into mostly UK politico punk.

When I was into punk/hardcore, I pretty much liked everything over the years, from the above to Minor Threat (and even goofy, later straight-edge stuff like Youth of Today) to other American punk like the Dead Kennedys and the Misfits.

Yup, here we are! To me, most of the bands mentioned are what I call hardcore. I was out of the scene by '81.

Punk rock was:

NY: Ramones, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Patti Smith, Television (they were not really a punk band but were essential to that scene), Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers

San Francisco: The Avengers, The Dils, The Mutants, The Dead Kennedys, Negative Trend, The Sleepers

UK: Sex Pistols, The Clash, X-Ray Spex, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Jam

Not complete listings by any means, I am forgetting many. I hung out at Mabuhay Gardens and Deaf Club in SF and saw some great shows. Also 330 Grove St.

I had heard California Uber Alles on KUSF (I think it was KUSF) and thought it was brilliant. When I saw a flyer for a DK show at Mabuhay, I made plans to be there.

I had never been to Mabuhay before and was surprised by the little baskets of popcorn on the tables. These, I found, were the club's authorised items for throwing at performers.

Can't remember who the opening band was. The second band came out and they were awful; it sounded like they had never played together before. Disorganized mess. I listened to a couple of songs and thought it would be possible to play much better and still sound raw. The lead singer was dressed in white and looked like a drama school dropout, prancing around with exaggerated spastic dance moves.

At some point I realized they were playing - or mangling, rather - California Uber Alles. I thought, man, they have some nerve, trashing the headlining band's song! I bet the Dead Kennedys are gonna be pissed!

And then I realized.

I saw the DKs many more times in the next couple of years and they got much, much better.

We've got a bigger problem now.
