Shirley Horn

Here's a woman who deserves her own thread. She was something else...I've never heard phrasing & delivery like this before. Usually, you cannot anticipate which phrase she'll put extra emphasis on or which one will be caressed by her wispy lower register. It's like hearing someone weave a spell. Does anyone have Shirley's Live at the Village Vanguard DVD? I'm thinking of buying it.

Were you watching Golden Girls re-runs or passed-out when I posted this six hours earlier?

I've been listening to a lot of Shirley lately. Verve called her "the best self-accompanying singer/pianist since Nat King Cole." I can't agree with this more. Her playing style reminds me very much of Bill Evans.

Verve said that, did they? I wonder which label she was on at the time... Yes, Shirley had 'skilz', as the kids say, but some of the mo...lass...es tempos of her later years are a bit much for my taste. I have a double CD of hers from the early 60s that I like, but haven't listened to in a while: 'Shirley Horn with Horns'/'Loads of Love'. In fact, I think I'll dig it out and go to sleep to it now...

She lived here in DC in relative obscurity for decades before a rediscovery with the You Won't Forget Me album (with Miles Davis and Toot Thelisman among others sitting in) in the early 90s. Word was they tried her as a girl singer fronting a big band, but it didn't fly. She left the label and came to DC, plying her trade at the piano. I used to play the You Won't Forget Me album (on cassette) all the time. I'll need to repurchase it.

No one has the ability to phrase lyrics like Horn did. Really a unique talent.

What did you all think of Carmen McCrae?
