Sinatra at the Sands - Frank Sinatra with the Count Basie Orchestra recorded live at The Sands in Vegas in 1966. Both Sinatra and the band are at the absolute height of their powers. Sinatra's off color stage banter is classic.

More realistic is the Dick's Picks series which are actual shows. All of the other official live releases are compilations from several shows edited to appear as if it is one show (particularly Live Dead).

Some of the best live Dead was never officially released. A lot of great shows float around in the form of bootlegs, which is what I'm guessing Matt was talking about. A couple of shows stand out in particular in my mind: San Bernadino's Swing Auditorium from 1977 and Eugene, OR from early 1978. The Eugene show was pretty hip in that Jerry tried to replicate the communication scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind with his guitar and played it directly into one of the last St. Stephens. Cool ****.

Obviously---Nirvana Unplugged. Also Live at the Filmore East is a no brainer. I think there is a corresponding CD, but Bjork's Live at the Royal Opera house DVD is the best concert DVD I've ever seen. For jazz, Pat Metheny's Trio Live, and Weather Report's 8:30.

It's a good one. I'm fortunate enough to have it on CD from the motherboard.

Radiohead - Berlin 7/4/00

Im sure this is floating around on the internet somewhere. It's a soundboard recording from a show where they debuted a number of songs from Amnesiac/Kid A for the first time. Their playing is so solid and you really get a sense of how new and urgent those songs sounded. They also throw in some rarely played older songs - Bishop's Robes and Talk Show Host. The band must have been in a great mood last night.

I also hear that their Bonnaroo gig last year was one of their best live shows ever and that it might be coming out in an official release format sometime soon.

Other good live albums/shows:

Donny Hathaway - Live (1972)
Miles Davis - Live at Newport
Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Live at the Fillmore East
Songs Ohia - Mi sei apparso come un fantasma
Nirvana - Halloween 1991

Absolutely. That was probably the most important live performance in the history of jazz. Critics were freaking out, calling the music "anti-jazz" and whatnot. Turns out that Trane was simply way ahead of the competition.
