I'm wondering if this is a good move, I appreciate good design and fine fit, and enjoy clothes, work is casual dress, with jeans on Friday OK, however i enjoy a more formal look, any experience you may have would be helpful,

You do not want to "show people up", but the way you dress (IMHO) reflects how you carry yourself.

I don't think you should worry too much about dressing better than your boss as long as you do what is expected of you. At the end of the day, how you perform is what really matters.

Nobody tries very hard at my company, it doesn't take much.

With that said, I've always heard that you dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Depends. In my line of work, my "boss" changes often enough -- the principal at my previous project always dressed impeccably (then again, the client was also an East Coast client where everyone wore suits and ties). I'm currently at a project in Texas and my manager wears jeans and a cotton shirt.

But I take all my professional advice from GDIFC. You gotta look the part, and dress awesomely.

This is a very bad idea. I do not recommend it. http://www.amazon.com/John-Molloys-N...8023174&sr=8-4 He may be dead, and it may be twenty years later, but this is still good information.

Depends on your boss and, should that test fail, how much you care about your job.

Personally, I would have hated to dress as badly as some of my "bosses" (my profession's hierarchy works a little differently to many) over the years. But I've also gone beyond caring too much what they think about me since although they've technically been my line managers, their impact on my future life isn't that much.

Dear dad use to repeat over and over again,
never dress better than your boss, the host, or the groom!

I am the only man in my company who habitually comes to work in coat and tie. My boss does not, and his boss, the president of the company, does not. I've never had any unpleasant repercussions over the practice, although I'm sure it's deemed eccentric by most.

+1

Is it the right job, if you have to dress poorly? Perhaps it will need some time and then you will be manager.
