Have heard Total Immersion is good but I think more geared to (at least) intermediate swimmers rather than non-swimmers. Same applies to masters. The best is always to find a personal coach, or find a class that works for you.

Usually only in extreme cases. And I think its more common in ultra distance running.

My fiancee attended a TI seminar and around a third of the participants were non-swimmers. They were doing laps (albeit slow ones) after the 2nd day.

i just watched an eppisode on a New England channel. and a "average" humman has a 13% chance of actually finishing the Ironman race... the ginny pig for it, actually finished.... with a torn muscle.

If "average" means "untrained," then that's not at all surprising to me.
