Here we go folks. -4% Pantomime (The Band + Van Morrison=AWESOME) -Across the Great Divide -A Change is Gonna Come. Maybe Rick Danko's best vocal, although obviously It Makes No Difference is a close contender. -Orange Juice Blues -Tears of Rage. Probably my favorite song ever. The Band are sort of like The Beatles...they made almost zero bad tracks.

The last two are simply out of this world. Levon Helm performs Ophelia a lot and it is one of my goals in life to see him in concert soon.

When Robbie Robertson was out promoting Storyville, he appeared on SNL. He and his band perfromed The Weight as their second tune of the night and I thought it was the best song I'd ever heard.

Not sure. Your first post seemed rather lucid and sober...

Speaking of The Band, I just found this cover of "Rag Mama Rag" done by The Boss. Not bad. http://youtube.com/watch?v=p7F0zbapPkk

Also, the Levon Helm doing "Ophelia" in Nashville late last year: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vA5YuDrmPUY&feature=related

I am really moved by The Moon Struck One. It's one of those songs that only Robbie Robertson could write and Richard Manuel could sing. Very haunting. My fav. verse: I was vacant, Julie was a bird with a broken wing We were always afraid of what tomorrow might bring We'll drive down to Durango--up and leave this place And maybe forget the triangle with a change of pace The car broke down when we had just begun And we walked back to the house while the moon struck one

I must have missed this thread. I like most every Band song they put out. Hard to pick a favorite 5. I do think my favorite album is still their first, Big Pink. From the psychedelic Chest Fever lyrics (and chilling/epic organ intro) to the sparse I Shall be Released, a great album.

Yeah, there really is no "best Band song." They are all so great. IMO it's one of the few groups in American music history that put out only a few (if any) duds. I saw Levon Helm this past summer and it was out of this world. The crowd was eating out of his hand.
