I agree.

5'11" and a lean 185 lbs is a nearly perfect looking athletic physique.

Some GREAT articles:

Check out Massive Eating especially. Great tips on how to put on lean muscle mass.

While I don't profess to be an expert about this, I asked my mom, who is a dietician and IS an expert about these things. I was dubious about it at first but she confirmed that multiple controlled studies have shown that 3500kCal +/- the metabolic rate is +/- a pound. The big trick about this though is that it has to be gradual. You cannot cut 1000 calories in a day and expect to see results because your metabolism slows way down to compensate and you'll lose a lot of muscle mass instead of fat.

You can find studies for and against this, but it basically shakes out to still be true. As I remember, the studies were based on actual experimentation and not stoichiometric calculations; some of the criticisms I've seen attack it based on the stoichiometry instead of the actual results.

As far as adding mass, exercise and eat good foods for it? Again, I'm no expert but eggs are basically the best source of protein ever and delicious to boot; at 70cal, try integrating 2 or 3 into your breakfast routine.

A lean 185 at 5'11 is hardly huge.

that depends on how lean. you are.

as for gaining 20lbs just do a lot of leg workouts with squats and deadlifts(don't neglect the upper body) and eat all the time and drink a gallon of water each day. eat every 2-3 hours with protein at every meal/snack. creatine might help too.

It is not small either... 5'11" and 165 lbs is pretty lean (FTR, I am 5'11" and 160 lbs.)

Correct. Depending upon the level of BF a sub 200 guy who's lean can look larger than a fat 200 pounder. Put another way, a 16" arm that's ripped looks pretty damn big on a guy under 6'.

Yup. I know a few dudes who are maybe... 5'10" or so, and well over 200 lbs, and they do not look that big. Just a lot of fat around the widsection and subcutaneous fat around the body. On the other had, I know a guy who is 6'2", between 185 and 195 lbs, (ripped all the time) who looks gigantic. And the dude is one of the strongest guys I know to boot.

16" on a guy under 6'. I hadn't thought about that. That is really pretty big.

Also depends on where they carry weight... people with big glutes, hams, and quads can weigh a lot without looking that big. 5'11 185 is also proportionally bigger than I am, so I don't think you could consider it to be particularly small.
