Sportscoat Waistbutton

Generally, should the waistbutton on a sportscoat be at the same placement as the waistbutton on a suit? It seems to me that it should, in that to create the proper silhoutte you need the button to be perfectly place between the lower & upper body.

Assuming you are not going for a different 'look' with the odd jacket, yes, the waist button (assuming only one is functional) should generally be in the same place relative to your body. However, you might also consider the relative chances of wearing the suit without a tie vs. those of wearing the jacket without a tie, and find that a higher button stance would better befit the odd jacket, so that the shirt doesn't look like such an expanse of empty space.
