What's the appeal of tapered jeans?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to understand the appeal of tapered jeans.

Firstly, on the other end of the spectrum, I hate hugely baggy jeans.

But straight leg slim fit seems to be the best look. I'm just not sure..what the appeal is for a tapered fit of jean..especially on a guy..

For women it's a hot look, because it accentuates their curves..gives the illusion of longer legs and is what I consider a "feminine" look.

Why is tapered jeans a good look for guys?

Just trying to get perspective on this...

To each his own..but I just want to understand that preference.

They look better, as long as it is slightly tapered. If you aren't a stick, your thighs are a lot bigger than your calves and a silght taper from the knee looks nice. With straight leg, there is a lot of jean bulk flapping around the ankles and it tends to be too wide to look good cuffed (IMHO).

They look good on thin people. No different than tapered trousers... Not exactly complex math here...

insert any jean cut/type in the blanks to make the sentence complete. not only did you provide a reason for why YOU prefer your type of jeans, you've even answered your own question:

A slight taper allows for stacking, which looks cool. Baggy jeans look good sometimes too. I know, I know, sounds crazy, but wait a while.

I don't understand it either, really. Just a few years ago tapered jeans were a huuuge faux pas. Personally, I still think they look weird. Slim, straight leg is way more flattering.

I don't generally like tapers for the stuff I wear, but they can look fine, and I'd hardly consider it inherently feminine. Denim leggings are inherently silly, and towards the peak of the trend, the obsession with getting as much taper as possible got pretty entertaining (see sufu). In any case, nothing inherently wrong with straight cuts or bootcuts, either. Depends on aesthetic and body type.

I thought we all loved the Dior look, no?

being short, i need a tapered leg to avoid looking fat

a true straight leg ends up looking a bit bootcut imo

a slight taper of 1" from knee to hem ends up looking straight legged. Any jean with an 8.5" knee and 7.5" hem is probably going to be something that comes home with me

If the OP is referring to severe tapers like April 77 joeys then I would agree that there's little appeal

I'm with Get Smart. A true straighteg looks like a bootleg. A slight taper looks best.

You know it's going to be a bad week when I'm agreeing with GetSmart on Sunday...

While I've got a wide array of cuts, the last few straight jeans I've purchased I've taken to the tailor to bring in the hem a little. It just seems to help the jean stack and drape a bit better on the shoe.

Such is the case only if there's extra length in the inseam. Tapers, imo, always need that little more of fabric to work.

Exact reason for me.

Except the jean flap is at my anKle.

truedat. I have been trying to wear dress shoes with jeans lately too and I think anything other than tapered jeans looks kind of weird.

Of course they need tapers. What other cut of pants were dress shoes ever intended for? They're slim, low profile shoes. At most, you might be able to wear a slim straightleg. [edit] Exception for French gunboats and chunky American shoes.
