I've heard you can find some good deals. Is it worth a 45 minute drive?

I have never found anything in the way of dress shoes there. YMMV.

Generally I find that it is not worth the trip. It is possible to find some nice deals at 70-80% off but out of all the times I've been there I've only bought one pair of shoes and I never wear them.

The good brands they sell - such as AE - are expensive and there is row upon row of unappealing shoes.

The only good things I've seen there are Eduardo G shoes for ~$100-200.

Not in NYC, any more. I found two pairs of Fratelli Rossetti three years ago, and one pair of Campanile for Canali two years ago, but nothing at all since then.

Not worth a 45 minute trip. No way. I work around the corner from one and only go in two or three times a year, and I'm a fanatical bargain shopper. They have lots and lots of crap. The best I've seen are AE at not better than ebay prices and Canali shoes at reasonable, but still high prices.

Mostly junk, you might be able to find a decent pair of beater shoes there, but I wouldn't travel 45 minutes to get there.

DSW has only been a waste of my time, FWIW.

Usually yes, but probably not 45 minutes. Especially with the far reaching knowledge of the internet in your house. Depending where you live, I'd suggest checking out a Marshall's if there is one near. The one near my place just opened up a shoe section and has a nice stock of Sperrys, AEs, Bostonians, JMs...

It's not worth a 45 minute drive for men's dress shoes.

If you want cheap athletic sneakers or fashion sneakers, though, it's one of your better options. They have a pretty good selection of New Balance and Saucony running sneakers all the time. They also stock Converse All-Stars and retro Adidas sneakers. All sell for slightly below regular retail price.

You can find good deals on Eccos and Kenneth Cole square toes, if that's what you're looking for. The last time I found a deal at DSW was ten years ago--I bought a pair of $400 Bruno Magli wingtips for $99.

Exactly. I get Asics Gel Kayanos for $50 at DSW. New Balance I get on ebay.

The Pentagon Row store in DC has several Allen and Edmonds.

There is a DSW five minutes or so from my office. I have visited it two or three times. Never made a purchase. I know DSWs are supposed to carry A-Es on occasion. I have never seen any A-Es or anything remotely comparable there. I have never made a purchase.

Obviously, I would most emphatically not consider it worth driving 45 minutes to visit.

That said, I have heard that they may vary the quality of the inventory according to the locale. (I have heard the same thing about Men's Wearhouse, BTW. MWs in more upscale locales have higher-quality inventory, supposedly). Since the DSW I have visited is in Santa Ana (there is a Men's Wearhouse in the same shopping plaza), that may skew things downward. Southern Californians will know what I mean.

i picked up some AE for $80 last xmas. they usually have a special sale twice a year (once after xmas, and then late summer) where they will take an additional 30-50% off the sale prices, which is how i got my $200 AE for $80. the best bargains for me are the running shoes, last years models usually go on sale for 50-70% of.

but it's completely hit and miss, not worth a dedicated trip if you're near one with time to kill, a 10 minute detour is ok,
