Custom Suits in Dallas, Texas

Thread Starter
There are a few custom clothiers in the Dallas area that I found doing a quick yellow pages search (and that had websites). They are as follows:

1) R.W. Furr (http://www.rwfurr.com/index.html)

2) Matthews Custom Clothing (http://www.matthewscustomclothing.com/index.html)

3) Tom James (http://www.tomjames.com/US/)

4) Lombardo Custom Apparel (http://www.lombardocustomapparel.com/)

I am considering getting a couple of custom suits done.

Has anybody used any of these companies in the past? Heard about these companies (good and/or bad)?

Any recommendation out of these 4? Any recommendations of other places in the D/FW area?

Thanks in advance.

Quite a range of choices you have there. I don't know anything about any of those except Tom James and Lombardo.

Tom James...well do a search on here and you'll find all you need to know about them, no need to repeat it.

Lombardo seems OK. I've never used them, but have talked to them several times and some of their stuff seems pretty nice. They don't do their own cutting. I understand that they use a shop in Canada that sews all their suits. They have a variety of products including fused (starting at around $1000) and canvassed (they say "handmade", I'm not sure what that means in this instance) that would start at around $2000 for a sportscoat. Again the cutting is done in Canada and I think it's more like a MTM than a true bespoke. They trade heavily on celebrity endorsements by getting all the local pro athletes as customers (Dirk, Avery, Emmitt, etc.).

In this category, you might consider Q Custom Clothiers. It's owned by two brothers whose father has been a custom tailor in Dallas for many years. They have a shop in Hong Kong that does all of their cutting. They will be less expensive than Lombardo's. I've had several shirts and a pair of trousers done there. They are pretty good and very nice guys. They'll do what they need to to make you happy. They have a shop in Highland Park Village and one in Uptown.

For true bespoke, you might consider Chris Despos. He works in both Dallas and Chicago (and posts on this board from time to time). I've never used him, but many on this board have and think he does great work. From the photos I've seen it looks great. He's obviously going to be a lot more expensive in a "you get what you pay for" kind of way.

Good luck.

Chris Despos has the reputation of being first-class. Never seen his work myself, but it might be worth your while to drop in.

Here's some of his work on me. Not the best picture, but it gives some idea of what he can do with a body that is less-than-ideal.

Do you remember what that ran you (if you don't mind me asking - if you do, I certainly understand)?

I think I read online somewhere that his custom suits started at about $3,000 - but if it is top notch quality, then it could definitely be worth a look.

Necro-time for this thread. Anybody got any info about any of the folks listed above? Specifically, anybody heard anything, or done business with R.W. Furr? Also, in snooping around the internet and looking at the CDTA website, I was able to find 5) Bill Mendrop Clothiers (http://www.billmendropclothiers.com/) 6) D. Jones Tailored Collection (http://djones.com/) I've also started taking my alterations to Cantu Tailors (based upon their recommendations in some other threads) and have been pleased with the results so far, but has anyone done know anything about their custom options? I've asked and price starts around $2100 these days for a suit but I've not gotten much further. I will ask next time I'm in about more details, but if someone has intel I'd very much appreciate some sharing on the matter.

Cantu outsources the suit making. Robert said to a place in new york, but who knows.

I figured as much. They don't look like they do a whole lot of custom work there. The question is though, has anybody ever purchased anything, and if so, how did they feel about it.

I believe Astor & Black has recently added a Dallas location to their roster. Having just read some of the reviews, however, you may want to take that with a grain of salt.

Yeah, I saw that, and was immediately skeptical of them. Found, in another thread a reference for an Alberto Cercone over off Greenville. Anybody have any info?

I think Q Custom Clothiers does custom sport coats and suits... but I made a custom shirt with them and specified that I wanted it slim... it did not come out very slim and it cost $200.

Take it back to them, they will slim it up for you at no charge. It's easy enough for them to do and they will change your pattern for all future shirts. They always make the first one a bit big because you can always slim one down, but if it comes out too slim you can't make it bigger. As for the $200 part...yeah, they're pretty expensive.

Who are you working with over there?

I made the shirt over a year ago (just about a year) and I don't remember. I just do moderntailor shirts now where I can get 4 for the price of 1QCC and I've gotten my measurements down pretty well and it doesn't take as long for them to arrive.

Seriously? For $200, I'd just go to Korshak and throw down for Hamilton. I went by the one in Highland park village recently and scratched them off my list. The woman there obviously knew jack shit. When I asked about fittings and other such things, she tried to tell me that things usually come out perfect. She also couldn't tell me about any of the stylistic options beyond the ones they have on their website or whether or not they had any sort of house style. She said "It's custom so you can do whatever you want!" Needless to say I was underwhelmed.
