NY Apartment hunting

I just recently moved back to NY and I'm currently staying w/ my parents in Queens. I work in Midtown Manhattan, and I'm looking for somewhere close to work but not in Manhattan (too much $$ for a shoebox, lol). Any good suggestions? What I'm really looking for in the neighborhood is safety, close to night life (bars, dining, lounges) and convenience to commute.

I don't know a lot of areas in Brooklyn, but I hear that Williamsburg is nice. I've been looking on Craigslist at apartments and a lot of places in E. Williamsburg are right in my price range of $1,100-$1,300.

Any suggestions? I also hear parts of Harlem are nice and relatively affordable?

You might try Hoboken (although rents their have gotten pretty huge lately too) or Jersey City. Your commute to midtown would probably be shorter than if you lived in parts of Brooklyn or Queens.

$1,100?

Sorry. Good luck with that.

In East Williamsburg, yes, for something small. This neighborhood is also known as Bushwick. Much more pleasant than it used to be, but not so close to most of the nightlife and restaurants you want.

A friend of mine just got a room in an apartment in Hells Kitchen for UNDER $800 a month. Granted it's about the size of a prison cell and doesn't have a window, but even then, I was amazed.

if you plan on living alone and want to pay those rents - go to the bronx (not kidding there are soem descent options) if you are willing to live with a roomate, there are def ways to find a room for that rate, you have to dig but you'll find them.

for reference i have a friend who lives on 92nd and 3rd and pays $1,200 for a basement studio apt - just to give you an idea of where the market is.

Upper West Side (Columbia) between 103 & 116. That's were I used to live. Plenty of nightlife, easy commute to Midtown. Cheaper rents on Columbus around the projects.

If you don't mind a slightly longer commute Brooklyn (Carrol Gardens, Cobble Hill, Williamsburg, Bushwick, etc) and parts of Queens will give you a good balance of nightlife/cheapness/young people you're seeking. They might even be in your price range if you want to live with a roommate and/or don't mind a closet.

You may want to try Washington Heights/Inwood. You can get a good sized studio in your price range
