nantucket is less social than MV. and being further out, it gets fewer day trippers. it has a different vibe from MV. tht's why we used to call MV calcutta-by-the-sea. then russell baker of the NYT used the phrase in print.

i was at the brotherhood in the early/mid 80s. it was run by the most decent and generous restaurant owner i ever encountered. he fixed me up with free housing and he allowed us to eat in the kitchen on off-days. at the end of the season, he took everyone who survived the entire summer to bermuda for a week. don't know if he still owns the place.

Im from Falmouth, which is in the cape, and i still haven't been to Nantucket or Vinyard. so that is on my to do list...
