I may be wrong but if you're doing them strictly for abs, intercostals, one is one too many. Crunches done correctly is a purer movement. Situps engage too many extraneous muscle groups to be as efficient for abs.

Let the naysaying begin!

Efficient? That's like saying squats are bad for the quadriceps because they're inefficient...

They still aren't anywhere near the best thing to work your abs, which was his point. To answer the OP's question, I don't think it's really possible to do too many, don't worry about it.

Too much is when you break your neck doing situps.

Then what kind of workout focuses on your abs ?

Try an abwheel (or sheet of paper if you don't want to buy more crap), or weighted crunches.

There's millions. Bicycles, active planks (doing a plank and lifting one arm barely off the floor, keeping your hips and spine completely stable), dead bug-legs (for the transverse abdominals), swim kicks, reverse crunches, crunches, basically there's a million things you can do to active your abs, look some of them up. Coreperformance.com has a lot of good ones, you can get a free trial account with them.

Eason, are planks the same thing as bridges?
Probably

The plank/bridge is when you put your forearm on the ground and your toes on the ground and keep your body as straight as possible. The side plank works your obliques. Another good one is the Superman. Get on your knees and hands. Then extend one leg behind you and straighten it. To balance, extend the opposite arm out. It is similar to deadbug except you're not on your back. Put a small bag of sand on your lumbar to make sure that your back is straight and parallel to the ground and that you're not hurting your back. Most abdominal exercises, when done poorly, can hurt the back. I was a candidate for grad school in exercise physiology until I realized grad school is a huge pain in the ass. The science is fun, the process is stupid.
