I was watching Notorious tonight, and I believe I saw Cary Grant, as he was sending away the motorcycle policeman and watching the lady wake up, wearing an oxford cloth button down collar shirt with french cuffs

Really? An OCBD+FC? Is this done?

Do they even exist? I would imagine shirtmakers would never do french cuffs with a button down. Unless you specially request your tailor to do it but then...

This has come up before, and it usually starts a fight. Proponents cite that movie. I don't deny that Grant wore one in the movie, but I am hard-pressed to find another example. Personally, I don't like the look and would never get one myself.

I would wear one (in fact - plan to order one). Not because Carry Grant wears one (though this doesn't hurt), but because such shirts are one good answer to the "french cuffs with cportcoats" dilemma. In general, i think there is an over-reaction to french cuffs in the US. They are not - or do not have to be - that stoggy and formall. Just because they are generally dressier than buttons, this does not mean that they are off limits for anything less than formal. The same way a suit can be worn casually rather than formally, french cuffs are perfecly fine for casual wear (as long as they fit well and all). That's just a way to fasten the cuffs, that used to be VERY common, so OCBD + FC i think is an ok way to take the french cuffs back to earth, where they belong.

I wouldnt wear one but feel free. I dont know why one would want to. Oxford cloth is supposed to be a casual shirt which can also be worn with a tweed jacket. The buttons sort of go with the feel. If one does wear french cuffs with a button down shirt, I would prefer to see them used in conjunction with silk knots.

I dont think anyone will care, theyd just think it was a personal quirk of the wearer.

Does anyone know where Grant got the shirt made? Maybe the order went wrong and he thought hed try it out anyway or didnt realize it until he was late for the first day of shooting?

Considering how meticulous Grant was about his appearance and that he was responsible for his own wardrobe, I find it highly doubtful it was anything but a deliberate choice.

But then I thought, no one photographed him in one again? Thats why, though perhaps deliberate, it may have been both experimental and deemed a disappointment.
