Marvelous wine. I'm down in Tampa celebrating my brother's 40th birthday. The wine is flowing freely. As a special gift to all of us my brother opened a special bottle had bought for around $225 around 6 years ago. A very smooth wine. My brother is a fairly serious collector with a wine cellar.

It was really good fun to be around family and friends and have some fine hickory and charcoal heated steaks.

Who else enjoys a good bottle of wine here?

What do you like?

Penfolds Shiraz is a pretty good Aussie wine. Though it is more of a 'brand' so tends to be pricey and enjoys a lot more recognition than some other deserving wines. Personally I'm not a great fan of reds; I prefer whites. For a more unusual, light, refreshing drop, try Xanadu's Secession (Western Australia). Very, very tasty.

The title "Penfolds Shiraz" encompasses quite a few wines ? Bin 28 ? Bin 128 (one of my favourite wines)? Bin 138 ? Bin 95 () ?

Don't forget Grange Hermitage - the daddy of them all!

Does that make it the Kiton of Australian wines?

I hope AF didn't enjoy it from styrofoam cups, although it does reduce the EMFs...

my favorite wine is the nouveau beaujolais which comes out every year between halloween and thanksgiving. it's about $7-$15 per bottle, very fresh, and better than anything else i've tried. the best brand for this changes every year, but louis tete (sp?) is usually a good bet. my foodie friends tease me that i like cheap wine.

I usually drink whatever is white and from France or Italy.

I don't know much about wines. Is there a good book out there that teaches you about the various wines, methods, etc, so you can go to a restaurant and pick a good bottle to go with your dinner?

Maybe reading Wine Spectator is a good start.

Probably a bit soon. Grange tends to lay down for at least 20-30 years, although I'm not sure on specific vintages.

Still, you had the right occasion for it and it went down great, so who cares?
