In short my Kidneys have failed and I am scheduled to start Dialysis
around the end of June. I will undergo surgery in 2 weeks to have a
Graft put in my arm to allow access - I have been asked to take part
in a research project using a new product (a fibrin sealant) which may
speed clotting.
The consent form they gave me to sign has this very disturbing
paragraph.
" If you are hurt as a result of being in this study, we have no plans to pay
you for lost wages, disability or discomfort. If you are hurt in this study in a
way that is unexpected (a way not listed in risks part of this form), Baxter
Healthcare or your insurance company MAY pay for your treatment."
I understand this to mean that if I am unlucky enough to experience
any of the listed risks I'll be lucky to get a get well card, and if I experience
some up to now unreported side effect they have an option to pay or
not to pay for treatment required due to side effects of their product.
There is no financial payment for taking part in this study. My reward
could be the product works and doesn't cause any ill effects.
