OK, we've all read the 5 items any stylish man should own thread. But for some fun how about 5 things the stylish man should not own?

Here are 5 to start you off:

1. A leather waistcoat
2. A knock-off watch
3. 4 button (or more) jacket
4. Dayglow socks (remember those?)
5. Piano key tie

This is going to be controversial and being new here I know I'm setting myself up for being ostracised but what the hell!

Hmm....Great question. I remember asking this to a female model friend of mine & here are a few things that spewed out of her mouth in about 10 seconds flat & with a great degree of venom behind the comments....

1) Any article of clothing that has been altered by a pair of scissors (i.e. wife beater T shirt, cut-off pair of denim pants to serve as shorts).
2) A button up, short sleeve shirt with a button down collar. Nothing says "dork" quite like this look.
3) Any type of double, front pleated pants (makes men look old & frumpy according to her).
4) Tight, grape smuggler blue jeans with very narrow legs at the bottom. European styling that should have stayed in Europe.
5) A-frame undershirts worn either seperately or in such a way that they are prominently seen. Some flash back to a plumber who did some work at her house & sweated all the time & stunk to high heaven.

Again, not all mine but trust me, if you saw the girl who made this list you'd be sure not to break any of them....ever.

^ SF rule #1002: don't trust your female friends when it comes to men's clothing.

Exhibit #1:

That's a staple of the Mod (very stylish people, in general) subculture. One of the better put together members here (IMO), Get Smart dresses like that every day. Check out Streetwear & Denim WAWYN thread for his outfits.

Who you calling "dork"?

I'll also have to respectfully disagree on this one. "Yes" for big & sloppy shirts. "No" for slim and awesome shirts.

Here's my five:

1) Huge-ass square-toed shoes
2) Jeans with obnoxious rear pockets, flared legs, and "distressed" washes
3) Bathing suits that look like ballooning nylon capoeira pants
4) Sport sandals
5) "Hard Rock" t-shirts

The outfit will look great if he loses another 15lbs to get a better chin line and clean up the tatoo.

How about renaming this thread as, "Five things that I would never own (or I am embarrassed about having owned)"?

Seriously, if we laid out all the members of SF end to end and looked at their answers, just about everything would be considered unstylish or unfashionable.

Personally, as long as you like it and as long as you think you can pull it off, it really does not matter. If there's something you think is unfashionable, it probably means that it's quite hard for you to pull it off, or that you've not seen too many people pull it off quite easily.

Doesn't necessarily mean a thing.

I'm gonna get crap for this but who cares:

1: excessive jewelry (pinky rings, wrist bracelets, necklaces, collar pins, collar bobbins, tie bars, tie pins, tie chains, big watches). I'm a fan of tie bars worn behind the tie holding down the narrow end below the keeper. Accessories are for women.
2: construction boots
3: sock braces
4: muscle shirts (a la Ricky Martin)
5: anything intentionally see-through (a la Ricky Martin)

Indeed. What about cuff links?

I've done much worse.

Five things I have owned and worn, that no man should ever own or wear:

1. A canary yellow low double-breasted suit.

2. Square-toed Fake snakeskin shoes

3. A gray tie with a yellow Chinese-style dragon embroidered on it

4. Girlfriend's vintage, rather shrunken, polyester shirt with a six inch collar

5. Bright yellow plastic frame sunglasses to match the above suit
