Good suits for thin people?

I am about 6' 2", 155-160 pounds. I have about a 32-33 waist, and about a 38 chest. My dilema is that it seems that a lot of suits start their long at 40.

Up to this point, I have shopped at Men's Wearhouse, because they were the only place where I could find suits off the rack that were 38L. I have some of "their" brands and a Ralph Lauren that I bought from there.

These suits are all fine and well, and they have gotten me by as I have not needed suits on a daily basis until about 18 months ago.

That being said, I have started to notice some degradation in quality in all of them except the Ralph Lauren (up to this point) and I would like to "upgrade" to suit(s) that will last me longer and are of higher quality.

I would like to have about 5 of them, as I typically wear suits 4 days a week to work. However, I do not think that I am quite to the point where I wish (or need) to get custom made suits.

I spoke to one person in the suit department of Saks or Nordstrom (can't remember which) at one time, who named some labels that are cut more narrow than others and in which I would likely be able to wear a 40L. So, I wanted to try to find a brand that is fitted a bit narrower (I believe it is the European Cut???).

I know that there are suits in between the ones I have and the ones that go from $2,000 up.

Does anyone have any suggestions for quality brands that fit that description, maxing out at maybe $1,000-$1,200?

I guess my next question after that would be: is there that big of a difference between say a $500 suit and a $1,000-$1,200, or do you not start noticing big differences until you get into the $2,000 plus range?

Any tips, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A lot of thin people utilize the search function and read the rather extensive coverage of all of these topics.

I know - I tried, but wasn't as successful as I had hoped in the results area.

I have nearly the same build. I have found that Polo Blue label in 39L fits me well, as does Brooks Brothers 39L (after substantial waist suppression is done by a tailor). But both brands make 39L. I don't know about 38L. I've also tried on a Ralph Lauren Black Label in 40L and it fits fairly well off the rack. I have read that Hickey Style www.hickeystyle.com in 40L runs a bit small, so it would likely work for frames like ours.

Okay SF authority with 7 posts.

Why does everyone here have to be such a dick about this? If you think it's a worthless thread, don't push it to the top by posting in it.

I have a 38" chest, 32w and am 6'-1". As overdog mentioned, Hickey in 40L would probably fit you well (mine here) as would the Congressman model by Polo Blue label (again, mine here). These are two suits that i've been the happiest with the fit of off the rack (after inevitable pant waist alteration), hope that helps.

I joined the same time you did. Perhaps I just bite my tongue a bit more. 90% (give or take) of the clothing discussion on this forum is in relation to slim/skinny/fitted garments... or even general brand fit. How could you possibly not cover something relevant with a search?

Yeah, stop coming up with new threads. Hell, let us not even have a forum. Get thee to a university library and look through old manuscripts about what consumed emperors' wore to look good.

I'm being sarcastic btw.

You should talk to forum member GetSmart. His place is http://www.thickasthievesla.com/. You can get one made for you for less $ than you're talking about. Search Thick as Thieves and you should get some samples of their work.

I find that RL Purple Label and Black Label are cut trim, so I need to size up from 40L to 42L. Since I'm really closer to a 39L, I prefer a European 50L which translates most closely to a US 39L. Canali, Corneliani, and Brioni are my favorites, although I don't own anything by Brioni (the shoulders on Canali and Brioni have more padding; the shoulders on Corneliani will be more natural. AFAIK Corneliani still makes Polo for RL, but they're made to US sizing so 39L is nearly impossible to find).

Not me. I react the same way when people in email chains say "take me off this list please". If you don't want to read it, don't.

I found a 38L Polo suit at a Marshall's recently. There are probably a few of those floating around the various RL stores in the country so just ask the local shop if they can bring one in. The Black Label 40L might be too wide in the shoulder.

I have some Brooks suits which have taught me not to buy suits at the Brothers for my build (currently about 41L).
