Would you consider this more of a brown than a grey?

No, it is dark grey without any hint of brown.

Would it be possible to get a closeup of the material, maybe in daylight/sunlight? The first shot is far too dark for me to see the true color.

I would all over this if it were a 40. RL Black Label runs a bit small in my experience, so a 36/37 in a lot of brands would be perfect for this.

unless I'm mistaken, this is the jacket:

Not sure if any of these shots show the color better, it's a very very dark herringbone, and therefore quite hard to photograph.

Thanks Joel. I appreciate that it's tough to photograph, but am curious to get a better look at the coloring. I want to be sure it isn't too similar to a coat I already have.

thats a nice jacket, is the fit similar to blue (polo) label? I'm a skinny guy and polo label fits me perfect.

Seems to me Black Label has slightly larger shoulders (I think 38R Blue Label is 18"). Also, I think Black Label lapels are slightly narrow versus Blue Label. I'm surprised by the length measurement of this Black Label, as mine is of a similar vintage and is longer - closer to 31" versus this coat measuring at 29.25".

Mahler: is this overall length measurement correct?

Anyone: please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

Here are a few closer shots, albeit with flash:

Yes, it is that jacket. Decided to keep something similar in 3-button instead.

Black Label is a trimmer fit, enough to size up at least +1 from most Polo models. Please see measurements in original post for comparison.

Length of 29.25" is from bottom of collar, so total length is ~30.75".

Thanks for the closeup shots - those come across much better. I'll double-check my Black Label tonight at home for measurements.

This is a nice jacket and it fit me great when I tried it on at store last week. I'll be keeping an eye on this incase the price comes down.

Weird - just checked my RL Black Label coat and it's 31" from bottom of collar to hem. So 29.25" is definitely too short for me... I wish yours had the same measurements - I'd love to get it.

do you have anymore pictures of the fit on you?

Sorry, don't have any pictures of the sportcoat being worn, but look at the RL Black Label page or see Anderson Cooper on CNN.
