Bond-ish villian types aside, my vote for American style icon is Steve McQueen. He showed how you could wear any classic American work or military clothing and be cool as well as masculine. Taking it up a few notches, he showed Americans how to wear a trim fit suit in the Thomas Crown affair. His look, both casual and dressy, is an example to this day.

Plus, you know that Steve could beat the crap out of any other style icon!

Not Thierry Mugler (style icon, Marvel supervillain category).

The Duke didn't need to beat anyone up; he would merely order his guards to do it for him, because frankly he couldn't be bothered.

You're an idiot. For the majority of his life the Duke didn't have "guards." Jon.

Arthur Rubinstein had a certain air about him. I'd say he's the most stylish pianist, at least.

Agreed. Yet more blasphemy: no one has yet mentioned either David Bowie or Cary Grant.

Do you mean that the foundation of style is substance? You gotta have something going before you dress it up?

They are paid for, but I believe the answer is a resounding 'definitely'.
