Maltese falcon

Thread Starter
Last night, I just happened to see the end of the film, "The Maltese Falcon", on one of the classic movie stations.  I noticed that "Sam Spade" buttoned all the buttons on his double breasted suit.  And more to the point, the length of the coat seemed rather short compared to today's preferences.  I did not think it looked bad.  Has the length of suit coats become longer over the decades?  Curious to read what the many informed members of this forum have to say.

i don't know about 'over the decades' but i have noticed that coat lengths have gotten longer in the past 4 or 5 years. 30" used to be the standard regular but it's now common to see 31.5".

The change in jacket lengths probably corresponds with the change in rise in trousers, and also the length of neckties. The waist of pants in the 30s-40s was generally higher and the jacket would probably be higher as well. I'd never really noticed the jacket thing but the pants change is pretty obvious.

I think it looks better - the jacket should just cover your rear. They are cutting them too long these days, so long that I take a regular length in some brands and I'm 6'4" tall..

This seems to be trend in either more conservative houses (Corneliani jackets seem really long these days, as do Hugo Boss jackets) or in bling-bling land. On the other hand, the much copied Prada silhouette is has a very short, modish jacket. Go figure.
