I remember reading about a company like that somewhere else. I forgot the name, but they do personality profiles and smell association tests, and all sorts of other wacky stuff to determine the ultimate smell for you. It takes like 6 months to complete the first batch and costs around $10K. Apparently the founder is a guy with an MBA in "fragrance marketing." I'm not even sure if that's a real degree or he just made it up.

When I read it, all I could think was "what if someone spent all that money waited 6 months for delivery, and it turned out their ideal cologne smelled exactly like old spice?"

Sounds like one of those Univ. of Phoenix online PhD's in "Esoteric Studies." Anyway, a bespoke fragrance is a neat idea if you are ridiculously wealthy, but really there are SO many amazing niche parfumeries out there that make products for EVERY type of scent, note, etc. (all that can be obtained for less than $200 a bottle) that it really is just a vanity idea to have a bespoke one made. I can nearly guarantee that unless you are ALSO going to pay to have the exclusive rights to a particular note that has never been used before, your 10K bespoke will smell like something that is already out there. Again, if you are absurdly wealthy and too busy/lazy to go sniffing around (or if you are just looking to respond to a query from a fellow billionaire as to the scent you are wearing that it is "a bespoke that Freddie Malle made up for me"), then bespoke might be the way to go. But, really, the voyage of searching around and finding a hidden "gem" is half the fun. Here are a few online stores with come amazing, off-kilter scents that are fun to peruse and sample: www.luckyscent.com www.aedes.com

I thought Savile Row was expensive.

I seem to remember a place in New York that did this, and it was a lot less expensive than $10k.

^Many excellent parfumeries in Europe do it too, and much less than that. I think those listed are the sort of trendiest sounding ones and the ones that make for the neatest article (I mean, a 10K perfume sounds great for "exclusivity.")

Lorenzo Villoresi, for example, one of the best parfumers on the planet and loved by hard core fragrance fans, does a bespoke service in his boutique in Florence. I can't remember what he charges to make up a batch for you, but it's not much comparatively (probably 1000 Euros or less.) Of course, he doesn't spend months with you on it, but probably does it there on the spot or over a few days.

There are many places that do these sorts of scents and have done them for centuries. This new "bespoke perfume" for ridiculous sums, as I've said, just smacks to me of a conversation name-dropping exercise for the ultra rich, something to talk about while trying to close the deal for a $40,000,000 NYC Townhouse or get their name up the waiting list for a Crodocile Birkin.

I mean, Chanel and Cartier aren't even parfumers... so offering a bespoke service seems really odd to me (even though Polge, the perfume head at Chanel, is very good). It is sort of like getting Rolex to make you a bicycle, just so you can say, "oh, yes, I had {insert name here} at Rolex make up this 10-speed for me!"

I think if you want the best drape and sleeve pitch you'll have to go bespoke.

And I still think that is too pompous, why not to spend that money more efficiently? buy a new watch or smth.

I just don`t get the idea.

I guess, in the fragrance world, that carries over into sillage and longevity? Like bespoke suits, you have all the choices, "Well, I want my cologne to project exactly seventeen feet in each direction and be perceptible for 4.3 hours, starting with a note of bergamot and ending with something close to 'new car smell.'"

How is buying a watch more efficient?
