What does everyone think of the brand Etro?

Shouldn't you change it to "Thomosexualist"?

I love Etro stuff. I have half a dozen shirts, wallets and a print scarf. I like the mix of textures and fabrics that they use. In a more causal setting, I like pairing one of their more lively shirts with a simpler suit or sports jacket. Adds a bit of colour and vibrancy to my look. I'd eventually like to get one of their suits for more casual wear. The multicolour pinstripes are a nice twist on a classic.

I think this is one of the best ways to wear Etro shirts. Having a full Etro ensemble (i.e., what they often present in their runway shows) is probably much to much for your average bear. But pairing your Etro pieces with other more subtle pieces adds a little bit of flair and colour, especially in a more casual context. Love it!

I can appreciate the styling, but the plastic buttons and double-needle construction of their shirts is a turn off, especially at their price point.

meh, not a fan of the loud colors; bu that's just me - i'm all about simple, understade clasic pieces. paisleys & loud stripes - I have no idea what are they supposed to convey, but it ain't me. When I see people wearing etro, I usually think "wtf?", simply because it is waaay to ironic, and I just can't see how (men's) clothing can be ironic - you've got to mean it (in my book anyway)!

It is for men who aren't afraid to wear something adventurous, men who don't want to be exiled into the realm of safety and tedium, or as you put it, "understated classics".

When I was in Rome a couple of weeks ago, you could see the two points of this thread very clearly, either people wear this kind of clothing very badly or very well. Adding an element of vibrant colour works quite well, but should be pared down with simpler accompanying pieces. Etro has some nice stuff and their stores definitely catch the eye, I wonder if you could not find better at the same price point however.

Well - I think it all depends on how you chose your pieces and put the outfit together. I've definitely seen individuals wearing Etro in a very loud, gaudy way; but they're often the same people who might wear Gaultier or outrageous Galliano pieces. They have a relatively wide selection of fabrics and textures, so you can chose more muted or subtle pieces. Might also depend on the occasion. I wouldn't wear Etro to a meeting or when I'm lecturing, but definitely going out to a party or something more festive/celebratory. Could you elaborate on the ironic idea? Not quite sure I got that.

well, by definition, ironic means a discrepancy between what you say and what you mean. Supposedly, the more convoluted and subtle the discrepancy, the more clever the irony is.

Works great in conversations, no doubt, but I find it to be a turnoff in clothing, because then it implies that it is your actual self that shouldn't be taken seriously. If clothing represents your persona, then I would prefer my clothing to say "well-put-together,-although-I-cannot-put-my-finger-on-exactly-why" (because this translates into overall perception of me) rather than "hey, I know that this is loud, but isn't this bold and cool? Seriously, look how loud this is and how I pull it off. Look! I am quirky and adventurous!" (only works for 17 year olds). So the discrepancy (hence, the intended irony) is between wearing something that is - for most intents and purposes - absurd, and between trying to pretend that it is not a big deal, "natural", and just for fun. Most people do NOT have the persona to pull this **** off, and that's why the best they can do is end up being "ironic". Seriously - how many people, besides Andre 3000 - one of the coolest dudes alive, can really not look stupid in loud outfits? Same like wearing a palestinian scarf when clubbing - if you are not going to blow yourself up, don't wear it.

naturally, this is just my opinion and I have no desire to **** on anybody who thinks otherwise. Everybody has their style, so if you like crazy pattetns, wear them. For me, "adventurous" reveals nothing but overzealous attempts to stand out in all the wrong ways. Can't help but equate loud patterns with the douche that tells "funny" jokes non stop.

a line that has stuck with me is "People should remember that you looked good, but they should not remember any particular article of clothing you wore"

for me, that really sums up what genleman's style should be - just subtly ooze from everything you do/wear, rather than be shoven into people's eyes by means of contrived "interesting" items or actions (e.g, like going out of your way to open a door for a woman when it will clearly cause more inconvenience in the particular situation)
