This is true of some of the best food.

went to Triple O's today at IFC, had a grilled chicken mushroom and cheese burger. pricey but good.

I go to the Festival Walk one. Its around the corner from the parents place and I get a CityU discount when I am there (plus the bartenders know my old man which gets us couple of pints for free). I could have sworn that the last time I was there I paid less than 100 for the burger.

Do you have a better recco for a burger in HK? I'm always looking for suggestions.

As in;

some of the best food is that which is simple and caters to the masses?

Or

some of the best foods have been wrecked by taking a simple tasty dish and slopping it out in the lowest quality and cost possible to drunken louts who vacuum it up and heave it back out?

Both are true

On the strength of this thread, I just ordered my first Reuben. At 110000 dong, it's pretty damn pricey for here...that is like almost seven bucks.

I dont really see what the fuss is about. It was ok, and filling sure, but really, I see no need to order this again.

You see, this is the problem. Like all great sandwiches, the Reuben is a truly kickass concoction when properly executed, i.e good ingedients and correctly (some would say lovingly) assembled. It's tough enough to get a decent (let alone a good) one in NYC. I can't imagine what you were served in Saigon. Most places give you a disgusting grilled pile of inedible crap: too much (shitty) meat, canned sauerkraut, wrong proportions, etc., etc. Unless you know a place makes one a good one, you are really taking your chances. Get some good quality ingedients and prepare one at home.

anybody mention that sandwich that made elvis fat? not the peanut butter and banana. i forget what it's called. it was like a hollowed loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jam, and a pound of bacon. i wouldn't dare try that.

I hear ya, but based on what you've just described, I'm not sure the thing even exists in Cuba. The Cuban shop I frequented in Atlanta has some of the best foods I've ever had, but even then their Cuban wouldn't belong in my top 5.

On a related note, a good sandwich should be widely available, tasty, and cheap. If the cuban is such a perfect sandwich, it should be available pretty much where there are spanish speakers--but, alas, it isn't.

Best Doner Kebab I've ever had was in Tokyo.

And as far as Reubens go, I like them even when they are mediocre.

I suddenly have a taste for a lobster roll. Gotta get back up to Maine.

Ital. Beef (w/hots), a good gyros or, of course, a Rueben.
